Guest columns Will be written by local people and we invite any of our readers to contribute their memories kof Seaforth to the column. .This week Mrs. John McCowan " of the Seaforth Horticultural Society has contributed a description of (\t-Ite calendula - Seaforth's Centennial Flower. The•Calendula has been chosen by a committee of the Seaforth Horticultural Society as the flower 141 for the Centennial year i in Seaforth. This genus of the daisy family includes several' species of herbaceous • annuals and perennials, but to gardeners the name means the of favorite, (Calendula officinale), called by Shakespeare Marygold and now known as Pot-Marigold. This is one of the easiest annuals to grow. Alth7utgh of • While several different arrangements of, boundaries for Huron riding have been proposed in recent months, there is as yet no decision .as .to what the final boundaries may be. In its most recent reprint which was debated...in _the Legislature last week the Electorial Boundaries Commission recom-, mended that the Huron riding be extended to include -five town- ships in MidClIesex and the town of StrathrOy. At the same time Hullett, McKillep, and Tucker- smith and the town of Seaforth were to be added to Huron-Bruce which also would join several municipalities as on the written boundary of the 'present riding • including' Port Elgin and Southampton. Strong objectsions have been raised by Government lubporters in the legislature from Middlesex who ,„wish t6- retain at least Strathroy'and Adelaide Township of the County in a rural county riding. Ct'tiservative members from Middlesex including Agricultural Minister Wm. Stewart and former treasurer, John While, as' well as R.G,Eaton, Middlesex South and Gordon W. Walker, London protested the arrangement' and demanded the commission reverse itself. The debate concluded . on• Thursday and the report •was returned to the Commission to • eonsiderthe suggestions advanced in the debat c. Both Jack Riddell, M.P.P. for Huron and Murray Gaunt M.P..P. for Huron-Bruce took part in' the debate. Excerpts from their remarks as Well as from those of other speakers follow: Mr, Eaton (Conservative in Middlesex(: And I refer directly to the riding of Huron. The 40 member for Huron (Mr. Riddell) was approaching the commission -asking that a portion of Middlesex North be placed in his, riding. Certainly there was some reaction by the people in that area after that proposal was carried through. For instance the mayor of Parkhill reacted against the breaking down of the county lines. Reeve Ken Vernon orWest Williams said' "We belong in Middlesex county." Adelaide township council added their support'. Reeve Charlie Nichols said "There is 100 per cent agreement on thetrief being sent to Queen's Park by Strathroy," I will refer to the telegram that was sent by the council of the town of Strathroy. I certainly won't read it all but they reacted in this way: Whereas the Commission has proposed that a portion of Huron and Middlesex Counties be consolidated into a new Huron-Middlesex Riding, the M.nicipalCouncil of the town of Strathroy strongly protests this proposed change. Of course when we make a proposal like that it could cause dr some other problems, certainly in the Huron area. Not being like the member for Huron county - not consulting with the. people that would be affected I have consulted with some of the people in Huron county - • Mr. Haggerty: Before or after? Mr. Eaton: Just recently. They would quite accept have a riding composed of Huron tl County. We• did have the same possible concept to create a riding for Huron and a riding 'for Bruce with) Owen _ Sound. There are people in Huron ' County who certainly support that concept. Mr. Speaker, I am speaking on behalf of the residents in Middle; sex who have approached me on this and some I have talked to in Huron, and .1 ,,propose tht we li should create a Tiding' of M dle- sex county and allow three r. ings to be . formed within the boundaries' of that area and from the city itself• will have some proposals in that regard. . I .would propose to • the- boundaries commission that a riding of Middle-Sex county be created ;vhich consist • of , the to*nshiPg"bfAdelaide; Ilidatilph, Caractpc, Delaware, Dorchester North, Ekfrid, Lobo, London, McGillivray, Metcalfe, Mosa,* Nissouri West, Westminster, Williams East, Williams West. and-the Indian reserves, the town of Parkhill and Strathroy and the villages of Ailsa Craig, Glencoe, Luean, Newberry and Wardsville. I do hope Mr. Speaker that the commission gives this proposal fair consideration. ' • Mr. Speaker:, The hon. Tember for Huron. Mr. J. Riddell (Huron): Mr. kerl wasfn't going to address myself to thkparticular resolu- tion' but the .member who just spoke has provoked me into saying a few words. First of all, I think he had better get his facts straight, Mr. Speaker. Wheri the first proposal came out, they had aligned four townships out of Perth with' Huron. I was quite pleased to accept that and I did not submit any kind of a submission to the electoral boundaries commission whatsoever. ' , Then there were sonic changes made and the commission sent out a second proposal. They wrote to me and asked what I thought of having five townships out of north Middlesex aligned with Huron rather than the townships out of Perth, It was at that time that I wrote a letter back, saying as far as I was concerned that it made abundantly good sense, that there was a lot in common between Middlesex North and Huron. So I think the member had better get his facts straight before he conies into this House and expounfIS on something that, as far as I'm concerned, he knoWs very. little about. Mr. Bullbrook: When he is wrong thongh, he is cabinet material. Mr. Riddell; The member for Middlesex South. Mr. Speaker. is very uneasy about losing the town of Strathroy, because it lessens his chances of retaining his seat in the'House. I can only say that 1 welcome the •opportunity of representing the town of Strath- roy and the township of Adelaide, if this is.the wish of the electoral 'boundaries commission. I might say. Mr. Speaker, that my roots were first established in Middlesex county, having been born, and raised there. I had many occasions to travel to Middlesex county with the late W. K. Riddell, who was my father and the former agricultural repre- sentative in the area. I know Middlesex County well encl.! will repeat that I will be only too happy to represent the townships Ar' L icon Beauty, Cream Beauty, F ame Beauty, Golden Beauty, A ricot Beauty and Persimmon Beaety. They were pne time popular as a country rememdy for the treatment of ulcers. An infusion was used for external application. •.• , It is the birthday flower fd'r the month of October. out of Middlesex North as well as Adelaideland the town of Strati'', roy. Mr. Eaton: Wouldn't the member want a riding of Huron? , Mr.' Riddell: Tuckersmith township juts down within four miles of Exeter, which is con- sidered to be in the southern portion of the Oding as it now exists. This beans that the member for Huron-Bruce (Mr. Gaunt) will be expected to travel from Southampten clear down to within four, miles of Exeter, or within approximately four miles of where I reside in order to Serve the people of his riding. This, to-my way of thinking, is somewaht ridiculous. I am -not suggesting, Mr. Speaker,,that would like to see any other changes made; other than . that I waeld like' to see Ttickersmith• realigned with Huron, owing to the faCt that it lies south of Highway 8 and is very much a part of Huron; it is ridiculous to include it with Huron-Bruce. I'm not•trying to say anything else, other than the fact that the next time the member for Middlesek South gets up to speak . he had better get his facts straight and mhybe talk to 'the electorarcommission: Hen. Mr.. Stewart (Conserva- tive, Middlesex orth): I think it's fair to say i regard to the resolutto • :.sed by the county of Middlesex that the electoral districts be maintained as theyi_ have been for the last several yers, that it is something that all of us would like ;to be able to continue, but I believe one has 'CO be realistic enough to recognize that the population of Middlesex North is such that it simply cannot be continued when redistribution is being considered throughout the province. There have to be some changes made. We were intrigued by the form of the first proposal of the redistribution commission when they proposed that the riding of Middlesex North, as it had been constituted, rurally, would be maintained, and that certain portions of the city of . London would be added to the riding to give it sufficient population for continuance.' That seemed to be an acceptable proposal. How- ever, the ridings, immediately to the north of us were apparently where the problem developed. Because we're led to believe that the riding of Huron, as was mentioned this afternoon by the Hon. member for Huron (Mr. Riddell) is to extend over into the south part of Perth county. I'm led to believe, by discus- sions that I've had with people in that area and by reading the London Free Press issue of Friday, December 13, that thCre was great consternation in Perth couhty regarding the loss of several townships' and some towns in that particular area to the riding of Huron. Representa- tions were made, I understand, to put Perth back together again as it had been in the past. That left the c mmission in the position of having to make some arrange- ments concerning the ridings of Huron. Huron-Bruce and Grey- Bruce, because I believe that like Middlesex North, when one looks at the total population of those three ridings it 'would be difficult 'indeed to justify the continuance of those three ridings. As a result, recommendations were made. I heard my hOn. friend from (Continued on Page 4a) Seaforth in Huron - Bruce?
