Seaforth led 2 to 1 after the 1st period with McIlwain and Murray Henderson scoring for the Beavers. Mitchell scored three straight before Bill McLaughlin tied up the score. Mitchell opened up strong in the 3rd period scoring at 1;12 to give Mitchell a 5 to 3 lead.' Mitchell held Seaforth in check until the 8:55 mark when Mcllwain scored. With Seaforth still behind 5 to 4 with 2.49 On Friday night the Seaforth Beavers handed Mitchell a 9 to 3 setback. For the second straight game Bill McLaughlin paced ,the Beavers with another 3 goal performance. Mitchell took a 2 to I lead after the 1st period with BO Beutteniniller scoring , for the Beavers. In ...the 2ricl. Bruce -McManus tied the score and then .the Beavers scored 4 more goals giving them a 6 to 2 lead aft er the 2nd period. Bill scored twice in this period with singles going to Murray , Henderson and Jack Mcllwain. Seaforth outscored Mitchell 3 to I in the 3rd period with Jack Mcllwain with his second goal, Paul Rau and Bill McLaughlin completing his hat trick. • There were only 3 penalties called in a very clean game; all to Mitchell. SEAFORTH 7 MITCHELL 5 TheSeaforth Beavers made it a clean sweep over Mitchell this year with a 7 to 5 victory, giving them 23 points only 2 out of 3rd place. The Beavers were paced by Jack M cllwain who scored 5 goals, 4 of them in the last period and 3 in the last 2 minutes and 49 sec. of the game. Mtichell placed 1 line out to check Seaforth's high scoring line of Mcllwain, McLaughlin end Bettftenmiller and kept them in For Sunday Final (By Dave Broome) The 1974-75 I.H.L. season is rapidly winding down to the final games this coming Sunday night (Feb. 16) and the play-off pairings seem set. All combinations have been worked out and it turns out that the Flyers and Kings will meet in one showdown while the Blues and Stars will face each other in the other series. A 1000 and 1 combinatior13,were possible and the games next week will not change the abcpe mentioned pairings. The real importance of next week's games is to see who will stumble their way into first place, and the League Trophy, aiid who will win the I.H.L. scoring race. The Flyers and Stars are-the. two teams that, har a last shot at th'e top spOt. The Flyers seem to have the best chance for the title because they play the Blues (if) - 2 losers, Sunday 'night. The Stars, on the other hand, play the Kings who have played well the last few weeks. Possibly one other reason the Flyers might be favoured is that they are riding on the heels of a four game undefeated streak and the Stars have not been overly -consistent. It Will be a well earned title no matter who finishes on top. The scoring race has finally thinned , out somewhat. Throughout ,the year it had remained close but one player, Bill Price of the Stars, has pulled out in frOnt of the pack. Eli11 led the scoring most of the/Season and lately had been suffering through a' scoring slump. Well, last Sunday night the Stars methodically hammered the Blues 10 - 2 and Price scored 3 goals and se t up 2 others to bring his point total to 26. The points he collected could•have easily gone higher as he and team mate Dale Kennedy seemed to score at will. They had more chances in that one game than most of us have all year. Bill seems to be in the, best position to win but Dale Kennedy (23 points), Kevan Broome (21 , points) and Gerry Feeny (20 points) all have an outside chance to win. • Scoring titles have eluded both Price and Kennedy. Both men, however, have played well this season as well as seasons past. Both have contributed good hockey and 'sportsmanship to the game and have earned their shot at the scoring title. Getting back to last Sunday's games, the Flyers and, Kings battled to a 3 - 3 tie and the Stars,• as mentioned before,embar- rassed the Blues 10-2. The Flyers-Kings game was fast and furious with the play going end to end. The score could have been higher but Rick Fortune (Flyers) and Jerry Cooper(Kings) played super in their respective nets. Considered by most to be the best two goal tenders in the league, they were both at their best with Fortune stopping a dozen point blank drives. Cooper came through on a couple of breakaways and also withstood several Flyer flurries. His biggest stop came when Ben Akker, ,Dave Broome and Brian Leonhardt all broke in alone late in the game. Broome got then last pass but could not put it past Cooper. Steve Eckert, Bob Montgomery What's new in curling? and Brian Leonhardt scored for the Flyers. .Jack Baker, with a pair of beautiful goals, and Jim Henderson scored for the' Kings. For Baker the two goals were his first of the season. The Kings were missing high scorers Ray Devereaux 'and Art Strong. This left their defense considerably weakened so Ai Geddes received a lot of ice time and he responded with a good effort. The Flyers' Lloyd Eisler played his, best game of the year and cleared the zone when the Kings pressed. The late game turned out to be a small football score as the Stars completely overpowered ,the Blues. Ten goals may seem to be a• high total but considering the, number of shots the Stars had on Gary Osborne , maybe the score wasn't so bad. Osborne had at least 40 - 50 shots on net and he played very well. . The Blues defence let the Stars skate unmolested most of the night and as a result Osborne became a welbused target. At the other end of the ice Stars' goalie Gary Montgomery, had an easy • night making perhaps 10 saves all night.. It seems the more ice time Dale Kennedy and Bill Price, get the faster they go. They ,picited up 9 Alio away on Saturday were Stew McCall, Bill Lot*, Bob Ste Marie and Herb Trdvis at a Farmer's spiel in Wingham where they also captured third prize. Locally out second mixed draw ended Friday evening, winners are as follows: Thursday 7 P.m. Steve Brown; 9 P.M. Neil McGavin, Fri. 7 P.M. Bill Campbell Sr.; Fri. 9 P.M. Bill Campbell Jr. They now have to play off to declare a winner. The final draw for the Charlie Barber Trophy starts Thursday evening . Where has the Winter gone? We're all deeply concerned for our caretaker Wilmer Broadfoot who is at present in 'Stratford General Hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery. See you at the Curling rink. points between, the two of them. Another rare feat was accomplished Sunday night when Gary "Cub" Kettles collected 4 assists. It's quite a task since he plays defence. Betties also has. 6- goals and brought his point total to 11. Ron Dale, Ken C ardno, Kevan Broome with 3, Bill Price with 3 and Dale Kennedy with a pair all connected for the Stars. Danny Muir and Bill Pinder replied for the Blues. One final point should be made before the year ends. In past seasons many players have been overlooked. These are the guys that come ' out every Sunday night. These are the men that come to play a good, clean, honest game of hockey. These pis do not cliniplairf, artite 'or play as if every member of the opposition was a sworn enemy. They have helped enormously to keep the game going and have, in short, given their best. Some of these are Bill Price, Dale Kennedy, Gary Betties, Al Geddes, Gary Montgomery, Danny Muir, Jim Carter and Ray Devereaux. Of courses there are many more and we know who they are. The final 'two games this• Sunday night will h ave the Stars and Kings at 7:30. The Flyers and Blues will meet at 9:00. remaining Jack McilWain then went to work scoring .3 m ore goals, tile last in an empty Mitchell nit giving the Beavers a 7 to 5 hard fought victory. Again as, in other Seaforth, Mitchell pines, it, was a very cleariplayed game. Seaforth have woi S out of their last 6 gears giving them 4th place in the league standings.
