In the best books' great men talk to us, give us their most precious thoughts and pour out their hearts and souls into ours." Tp, this 'Carlyle added, "All that mankind has done, thought Or gained is lying as in magic preservation on the pages of books. Good books do many things for us. They ate our universities, the levellers of society, the teachers of wisdom and knowledge. Modern civilization .has its fulfilment in books and there is culture for all through reading. For the Wise. the joy of reading should be life's crowning pleasure." No one who seeks to live a full and adequate life will omit the culture of his mind which comes from a love of literature and the study of books. Books are the vehicles of thought and vision and man cannot gain real breadth of View without them. We read not only to inform, to add to air store of knowledge but. also, to. flourish within us fine and noble feelings and lofty aspirations. The best books live by the appeal they make to the heart. They move' us. inspire us, console us, enlarge our interests, quicken our emotions and keep us from mental. stagnation. They provide bridges by which the reader may communicate agreeably across the barriers of time' and space. After reading ,a good book, we feel well. above our normal best. Lifted on the shoulders of great writers we catch a glimpse of new worlds which are within the reach of the human spirit. A. luminous hole has been knocked in the dusk of our knowledge and we rise from the book with . wider horizon§, broader sympathies and great& comprehension. It has been said that the great books constitute a transcript of a great conVersatidn'aaross the ages and we share. the 'thoughts and emotions of the writers as if we were sitting with them around the cheerful fireplace. In the reading room we can join the great company of writers and journey into fair lands where worry and vexation never follow. One has only to reach out a hand to bring them down, only a mind to bring them to life, There they ,,stank in silence, lingering patiently not to graiit audience but to gain it. Unless the contents reach the reader's mind, a book is nothing, its writer a voice unheard and meaningless. To use them wisely is to go to them for help, to appeal to them when our knowledge anal powers ot thought have failed, to be led into widet fields than our own and receive from them the judgment and counsel of time. Their dental health is then checked every six months or year and their teeth are brushed with flouride at their pre-school screening. Children in the county's schools from Kindergarten to G rade 8 are visited once a year by a public health nurse who discusses dental techniques and nutrition and explains what goes on in a 'dentist's office, Mrs. Thind says. The nurse also shoWs films on brushing and how to floss Flouride is also applied ,to the children's teeth 'once per year. Talk by Jim Scott your Bell manager You may be aware that Bell Canada is ini- tiating directory assistance charging in the J-IenSall and Clinton exchange areas, starting February 9th, 1975. • I thought it might be helpful to review the plan and to stress that no one need ever incur an unnecessary charge. Most people use Directory Assistance only as a last resort, when the phone number they need is not yet listed in their directory. These necessary requests will continue to be free.. It's the Unnecessary calls we want to discourage to . ensure reliable service for those who really ' need it. That's' why, beginning February 9th, 1975, there will bea 2.5 cent charge for each phone number provided by a directory assistance' operator when the requested number is listed in your phone hook. Every billing month, the *first three such requests made from your residence phone will be free. After th-at, the charge will apply. Necessary calls, for numbers not yet - listed in your directory are still free. And 'whether the number is listed or not, there is no charge for anyone who has a disability that makes it difficult to use a directory or for persons 65 years \or over. If you qualify for an exemption, just call your Bell Canada business office and 'ask for a special exemption form. Also free are emergency calls and calls from pay phones, hotel, motel and hospital rooms. In closing.' I'd just like to repeat that you can avoid unnecessary directory 'assis- tance.charges by looking in the boOk before calling. The number you need is probably listed. 1973: our directory assistance operators handled more than 220 million calls—more than 70 per cent of them were for numbers already listed in the phone book.) It's also a good idea to keep emergency and frequently called numl3ers up-to-date in the space provided .in the introductory pages of your directory.
