iiritit !I . DIAMOND. "There's not enough
publie\skating in Seaforth," is a
comment we have heard with,
some frequency this winter.
Skating is available at the arena
here for parents and children on
Wednesday afternoons, but it
ends at.3:30, before children over
five are out of school.
There is also public skating" on
Saturday aft ernoons, but sortie
mothers say that Saturday is their
only day when they are able to go
shopping and run errands with
the family Oar.
We asked Recreation Director
Clive Buist if more time could be
available at the arena for public
skating, perhaps early in the
evening for adults and school age
children.
Clive pointed out that people
who want to skate are not being
diserinitnat'ed against; it's just
that the arefia is booked for
something else seven nights a
week.
"Figure skaters have
one night, broomball two, Junrio
D Hockey one and a half,
industrial hockey one and minor
▪ hockey one. There just aren't
enough nights in the week."
Next year, Clive said, hopefully
one night per week can be set
aside for public skating at the
arena, and it will be the . same
regular night every week. Junior
D hockey just started this year in
Seaforth and it was thought that
the Centenaires should be able to
use the arena on Friday night, a
• good night for attracting crowds.
The Centenaires, however,
have attracted excellent crowds at
both th r uesday and Friday
night ome games, the rec
directd said.
It's not easy juggling the needs
of all the spectial interest groups
who want to use our arena, but
Clive assured us that he'll do
everything possible to see that
next year, the ordinary skaters
get their full share of ice time.

CrOss country skiing is fast
catthing up with snowmobiling-tt,
a popular winter sport around
here. Those lonely figures you
might see gliding. silently over the
fields in 'the countryside aren't
crazy -- they are cross country
skiers,
Cross country devotees like -the
fact that they. can enjoy their sport
practically in their own back yards
and on the streets in town on a
quiet Sunday after a heavy snow
fall.
Cross country skiing is cheap (a
complete outfit can be bought for
about $40.) and good exercise.
Many.downhil skiers who got sick
of saving up a pile of dough to go
to a ski resort in the north for the
weekend and then standing in
endless lines waiting for a tow to
the top of the hill, are converting
to the less expensive cross
country equipinent.
While any slightly hilly field is
ideal for cross country skiing,
there are areas close by' where
special trails are marked out and
where there is -no competition
from the noisy and faster winter
sport, snowmobiling.
Last weekend we took to the
trails that wind through the Elora
Gorge Park and except for getting
lost and a little tired out near the
end of our rambles, enjoyed a
lovely afternoon of cross country
skiing.
Some of the trails in the Elora
Park run a little too close to the
Gorge for our comfort, aithOugh
there is a fence between the trail
and the precipitous rocky drop.
Many more experienced skiers
seemed unpreturbed though. ,
The Elora Gorge Park is a gr6at
place to, ski free of charge and
there are picnic tables available

The wages of town ernplOnea
were raised at a recent special
meeting of the Seaforth Town
Council. All • public works
employees were given'a $1.15 per
hour increase.
This brings the town foreman's
wages up to 54,4.& .per hour, the
next employee to $4.00' per hour
and the• third in seniority to $3.65
per hour. This gives the third
employee an effective 41 per cent
increase, according to Town
Clerk, Ernie W' liams.
John Muir has been hired as
assistant to e arena manager at
$3.80 per ur. He will assist the
town m on public w9rks when
not ne ded at the arena.
C ncil will discuss the
pla ned alterations to the arena -
in a meeting shortly with architect
Brian Garrett. The local Lions
Club has suggested removing the
windows that look out over the ice
in the arena. hall and sound
proofing the hall. Lloyd Eisler of
the Industrial Hockey League
suggested that a heated room to
store the leagues' hockey equip-
ment be provided at the arena.

After reading our blurb last
week on the "child proof' pill
containers that aren't so child
proof, one reader wrote:
"At last someone agrees with
me that they should never be
called "child proof." Before they
became compulsory, I objected to
the doctor, to the druggist, and to
the lady in the booth promoting
them at the London Fair and they
all more or, less scoffed at me. My
two year old had opened one with
a table knife.
"Most of the prescriptions I've
had were for two weeks. After
taking the top off four times a day
for two days, it could be removed
without pressure on the top. I
came to the conclusion that the
plastic "wore smooth" on the
catches.
"A heavy glass bottle like that
of children's aspirin does not do
this. And the child proof top
seems to be satisfactory. Should
all bottles be like the children's
aspirin oUe? Maybe you could get
some action going on it."
What do our readers think?
Perhaps a letter to the Consumer
Protection Branch• or to the CBC
TV show Market place might
result in a look into just how safe
"child proof" really is.

2 lbs. --- Dr. Frank Mills, medical officer
of health, told county council at
last Friday's session that
• the Huron County, Health Unit
would qualify for a 25 per cent
increase in its provincial grant if it.
would amalgamate with other
county health .units.
Provincial grants now cover 50
per cent of ,Cite health u nits
operating budget but the county
health unit would qualify for a 75
per cent grant if it joined other
counties.
• Dr. Mills told council that the
Huron County health is being
descriminated against by the
province and agreed with Warden
Anson McKinley that it is simply
an unfair arrangement.
Health Minister Frank Miller ,
will visit the county Friday, Feb. 7
and Dr. Mills urged councillors to
contest the issue with the
Minister as he makes his way
through the municipalities in the
county. 'Health Minister Miller
will be in Goderich at the board,•.
recommendations to be made at a
later date.
Committee chairman, John
Tinney, told council that the
Province of Ontario will provide
80 per cent subsidy for both
capital and operating costs of
,approved homes and up to 80 per
ccnt of the cost to operate
auziliary homes for the mentally
'retarded.
Arrangements arc now being
completed to provide
transportation for a number of
residents of Huronview. as 'well
as others in 'the area, to attend a
workshpp in Dashwood. At least
six r es idents of Huronview are
benefitting from the program and
an application has been made for
a complete survey of the county to
determine the present needs of
the programs. Both of these
programs would operate under a
provincial grant of 100 per cent.
