Me poppy, which symbolizes
the sacrifi ce in the cause of-
freedom of two generations of
Canadians, is now threatening
the lives of their sons and
daughters, even unto the third
generation. Opium and heroin
and other derivatives of this
bright little flower are ,being used,
by many young people to, provide,
themselves with a new taste and
feeling.
It is going to cost a great deal of
money to wage war successfully
against both the creators and the
victims of this battle. 16 the
October issue of the Legion
Magazine, Anthony. Stacey
suggests that it is time for a
change in the application of the
funds derived from the" sale of
'poppies. 'He claims that if , a
portion of the funds obtained
from the sale of poppies were
used for programs of medical
research to ensure 'healthier
citizens of the future, the poppy
and its purpose would serve as a
more lasting and meaningful
memorial to Canada's war dead.
Yes; the poppies do grow in
Flanders fields. They also grow
in the fields of Turkey; India,
China, Indonesia, to be turned
into lethal weapons M be used
against our society,
The above letter- appeared in
this months Legion Magazine,
and was -written Kay Berry of
Burnaby B.C.
Anthony May's. suggestions
have a great deal-of -merit for the
future use of the poppy fund, but
for some time to come I feel that
the fund should be • used for its
original purpose.
