The Huron Expositor, 1975-01-16, Page 3We're going to call the column
"Soniettg to Say" and it will ...ear as
oftpips.,we have something to say a a time
to befite it. So, here goes.
It was great to see Seaforth's C tennial
Year starting with a bang on N Year's
Eve. Centennial organizers did good job
with their presentation of Seafo h's plans
for thb big Centennial weeken on • e
CKNX Guy Lombardcr,Show. Recreation
Director Clive Buist and our new mayor'
Betty Cardno did a' creditable job • as
spokesmen for the town.
The Seaforth Merchants' an4
Centennial Committee's sponsorship of the
Guy Lombardo New Year's Show gave a
big boost to 'the Town's Centennial plans.
Since the show appeared we've also had
proof of the newspaper adage that
advertising whether on TV or in. your local ,
weekly, pays.
The day before New Years there were
about 200 tickets left for the Centennial
kick-off Guy Lombardo Dance at the arena ,
here. onMay 15. After Seaforth's night ,on
TV, sales took off. Jim Crocker, whoin
charge of ticket sales said there were 1 ,
tickets left last Monday, January 6.By '
Tuesday afternoon, all the tickets were sold
out.
Jim reports that he's hid more than 100
•
phone calls asking for tickets since, then,
but he's had to tell everyone, Including-one
town councillor who Jeft/things a little too
late', that there just weren't any more
tickets:. That makes 1000 tickets sold_in
Seaforth and area since September for a
May 15 dance. Not bad eh? It certainly
augers well for , successful centennial
celebrations.
If .you don't have tickets for Guy
Lombardo, don't dispair. The Centennial
Committee is going to sell tickets for the
areria',s bleacher seats for the , big night
starting later on this month, But for
heavens sake, as soon as they are
advertised for sale, buy them, or you might
just end up listening to the sweetest music
this side of Heaven from the arena parking
lot!

It's a pretty he re Ponsibility being
the foutth editor in 104 years. My three
predecessors logged an average of.34 and
two thirds years each in the job. That's a
pretty heavy commitment, in sheer time at
least and we don't intend to think about
following in their footsteps to that extent.
Working at this job until two thirds,: the
way through the year 2009 is a bit too much
to contemplate right now.
However. we do hope to continue some •
of the Expositor traditions, like good
coverage and analysis of what is going on
in Seaforth and area, thought provoking
editorials and good service to our readers
and customers. If you have A beef or a
-suggestion, call us or write a letter to the
editor. This is YOUR paper, all you 10,000
or so people who read us every week....
This column is a new Expositor feature.
We've found it difficult over the past year
and a half to classify everything we want to
write about as either straight news story or
editorial material. This column is intended
to fill a gap that we have felt and allow the
editor to write in a sometimes personal
vein.
Although we thought there had been a
pretty long delay in a decision from the
province on the local day care centre (see
last-week's editorial), a talk this week with
Tov.;n Clerk Ernie Williams reminded us
that the day care delay is tiny, compared
with the several years it took to get the first
senior citizens' apartment building
underway.
We called Mr. Williams to see h ow the
survey into the need for more senior
citizens' apartments here was coming
along. Council asked OHC to make the
su rvey in the fall following many requests
from local people. "There is no survey
y'et,", Mr. Williams said, "They haven't
star ted".
The clerk said he got two letters from
OHC both saying exactly the same thing
and signed by the same person back-in the
fall acknowledging council's reque,st fox. a-.•
survey. Since that burst of •energy,
nothing.
How long did the survey for the last
apartment building take? We asked Mr.
Williams. About two years, he said, from
the time it was ihitiated and _completed.
Then when tenders were finally isitted, „
problems arose in finding a suitable site in
' town for the apartments and all in all
several years elapsed until the apartments
were 'finally built.
," So, we cautiously suggest that when the
survey for the second set of Apartments
does get underway, Seaforth citizens of say
age 50 and up consider applying for
apartments, on the hope that by the time
the apartments are a reality, they will be
old enough to qualify.
