(Photo by Pat Langlola) Cheap and nasty sea to sea Cl (The - following column by McKenzie Porter appeared in the Toronto Sun several months ago. Although not all , Mr. porter's remarks apply here, we find his ideas worth thinking about. By McKenzie Porter ' of the Toronto Sun -The town-of Fergus, Ont., (pop: 5445), has one of the finest 19th-century strtets in North America. Stone masonry of the early and. middle Victorian periods follows architectural lines derived from the elegant regency style. But already some of the old buildings have been botched by . modern fronts, or tacades of glass and plastic, slapped on stores, offices and restaurants in rectangular stapes and gaudy colors. Old small towns -everywhere are rapidly losing their character to cheap and nasty renovations of alarming unifOrmity. Our streetscapes are to become not merely hideous, but identical from sea to sea. One reason lies in the axiom that nothing must interfere with business. Many munieipal politicians are human bullocks, impotent in both bleginess and art, who .survive only by being servile to local businessmen. OUr -old streets are • diimantled and mutilated because planning is in the hands of these, artistic eunuchs. . Even more• •.contemptible, however, are the architects, who • at least have been exposed during their schooling to the beauties of buildings. When th,e whore of North' America is oblongs and cubes 'of synthetic blocks, slabs and panels, the architectural profession will go on record as the most sycophantic and rapacious horde of prostitutes. that ever Beat then price increases.
