T Make A Puzzle
Jigsaw puzzles if they are suited to the individual
child's level, can teach him many things as well as
providing hours of creative fun. These simple .
puzzles can be easily made b`i• you and your children.
Materials:
1 - piece of ordinary cardboard carton twelve inches
by twelve inches
' I colorful yet simple picture, preferably tl a glossy
kind cut from a magazine, twelve inches by
twelve inches in size
-paper glue
Instructions:
1: glue the picture to the piece of cardboard and let
dry.
2. with i pencil draw lines to divide up the picture as
is done normally in any igsaw -puzzle (as a
a•;, general i'itM.'fhe o4iR r"t 'child the larger t 'e'
1 pieces in the puzzle should be)
3. cut out the sections you have drawn
4. nothing can be as frustrating' as trying to do a
d- jigsaw puzzle when some of the pieces are
missing, always keep the pieces of the puzzle
{ together in some sort of box or large envelope.

Most children are born lose s. This is thanks to our
} society's famous "Star Sys em".
k Under this system of completion a pyramid is
formed. At the top you find a small number of
persons perfect'enough to be classed as the best,
V while underneath them you find the rest of us, the.
second or third or fourth best.
in the "Star System" the best are sought out and
rewarded leaving the lesser gods to be ignored,
Whether 'it is. the 'best hockey ¢layer, the most
beautiful girl or the quickest speller the system and
its effects' are the same.
•
a in most discussions of the faults of competit;on, it is
•
organized sports which receive the most attention.
Although the ills of organized sports'are perhaps the
most obvious. there is another area 'which should
deserve equal attention when we speal'of harmful,
competition,. This is the school system based on
competition rather than learning.
From the moment a child, enters grade one, one fact
is drilled into him. this being that unless he gets a
l certain mark or average he will fail. 'Those children
j who receive the highest marks also receive the most
favors and praise from parents and teachers alike. it
floes not takoa child too long to understand that in
order to get on the good side of his teacher or parents
be must try, to get the best marks in the class. The
r- children are thus going to school not to learn but
rather to get the best marks. After only a short time
I;. of failing to get the best marks, a child sees that
there is no use trying and he drops out of the
competition in the "Classroom Star Game". The
final result of the competition can be seen clearly in
j.i the fact that every year there is a smaller percentage
l of children going on either to university or technical
schools.
Competition can be a healthy and stimulating
method of improving and enjoying whatever activity
you are doing. The best and most beneficial type of
I;tt competition is easily understood by watching young
- children.at play. When a child plays a game he does
x so first of -all because he wants to and enjoys the
game. He also plays because he wants to prove to
himself that he can. play as. well as anybody else.
Every ti tie he plays he tries to improve on whatever
he did before. In other words the child is competing
against fiiinseif.
`I Just as we now teach our children the "Star System" q
ty pe of competition„ we can just as easily teach -them
i1 a type of competition which will do therm some good
and which will encourage them to improve. And this
;J improvement trust be designed to make the child a
` better and happier person, not simply to prove who is
the smartest or the fastest,
MWIdt0h. all can be.wiitners if given a.fair chance.
But they have clearly lost tliis'chince when you see a
