According to the latest available figures, $254,- 266,623 worth of property went :up in 'flames in a single 12 -month period. Ontario and Quebec, top- ped the list with nearly $80 million in' losses , each: The figures, compiled for `1972, indicate an in- crease of $18 million -1q, losses over the previous y year. . The largest single classi- fir«ation of fire loss was residential at' $82,187,309. ,Electrical appliances were, blamed for more than 14,0001 fires costing more than $44 million. Careless smoking caus- ed more `than 22,000 fires costing more than $18 mil- lion. This was the largest single cause of fires, though the dollar value of the damage was not at the top. In all there were 78,895 fires recorded in Canada for the year in the survey. And there's one fire loss that no price can be put on: human life.
