HOW A PETCRBORA FARMER . DROPPED
$150 ON A PATENT BUTTER FORMULA.
Charles Ralston and Douglas Thurs-
ton of 172 Yonge at., Toronto, were
arraigned in the poli.e court on Fri.
day charged with fraud by W. J.
Kearns, a farmer from Peterboro.
Kearns says he met Thurston at the
Industrial Exhibition and he explained
to him a patent he bad for making 12
I pounds of butter from 100 pounds tat
milk orthree times the average pro-
duct from the same quantity of lacteal
fluid.
Thurston wanted Kearns to take the.
agency of his patent for Peterboro'
county. He would Wait Kearns
licenses to use theprocess and the
formula for doing so at $1.25 apiece '
and he could sell at largely increased l
figures to the farmers... He suttee-
quently wrote to Kearns at Peterboro'
that he would not sell lees ' true fifty
licenses at a time, and wanted him to
take 300. Kearns refused to pay
over any. ,n ouey till he had ocular
proof ofwhat the process could do,
and coming to Toronto on October
12 :lie deposi ted the money in the
hands of a friend.
4:Thurston took Kearns up to his
home at 81 O'Hara aveutto to give the
latter ocular demonstration, and Ral-
ston was then introduced. Thurston
took a gallon of milk, heated it to 90
degrees, cooled it rapidly into 52 degrees
and then added three pounds of butter,
explaining at the same time that
though the latter detail was necessary
at each churning the same butter
could be used three times.
The churning did not pan out very
eatisfctorily, and Kearns stayed at the
house all night to see a repetition of
the experiment in the morning, On
the second trial, however, the churn,
by some means or other, fell over just
as they were about to take out the
butter, and the contents spilled far and
wide.
Iialstoti and Kearns then went
down town together and the former
otderetl.some pans and jars and other
utensils to make butter, he said, and
at last Kearns consented to hitnd over
