Vote as You've Seen Praying.
Josiah, put your slippers on,
And cease your reckless chatter;
I want to have a word with you
About a little matter.
Josiah, look me in the face;
You know this world's Condition,
Yet you have never cast a vote
Hight out for Prohibition.
I heard you on your knees last night
Ask help to keep from straying;
And now I want to know if you
WW vote as you've been praying.
You've prayed as loud as any man
While with the tide a -floating;
Josiah, you must stop sioh work,
And do some better voting.
We women pray for better times,
Aud work right bard to make 'em;
You men vote liquor with its crimes,
And we just have to take them.
How long, Josiab, rnust this be?
We, work and pray against evil;
You pray all right, for what I see,
But vote just for the devil.
There, now, I've said my say, and you
Just save your ammunition,
Ansi vote the way you always pray,
For total Prohibition,
Startling Figures.
Depicting the. intemperance pt'e-
ye/entr in Toronto, Col. 4Volfenharger,
of Nebrdska, 'in an actcfr•ess in that
city, called attention to what he term-
ed "the startling figures" of the Police
Court records for last year. ' They
showed tt tot'rl of 8,991 persons taken
before the Police Magistrate, of wbom
1,370 were under 20 years of age, and
603 were Children under 15, This, he
declared, showed a monstrous condi.
tiou of affairs among the young of
Toronto produced by this .legalized
curse, and said that if she is to main-
tain her permanent position as the
great moral city of this' continent she
must look to the protection of the
youth by stamping nut the liquor
traffic.
A powerful passage of the impres-
sive and convincing address was that
s dealing with the effect of the liquor
traffic upon the laboring classes. He
• defined it as appalling. The best
authorities that we conldi consult
placed the cost of the trail.; in Tor-
onto at $3,100,000. The revenue
from it was hot $60.000, so that
$8,040,000 was squandered annually
to the loss of labor and Iegitimate
trade, as every dollar spent for liquor
meant the destruction of a half -day's
work for labor. The saloons of this
city meant 1,500,000 days' work de-
stroyed for the tailors of Toronto for
the twelve monthe.
In further dealing with the Toronto
liquor expenditures, Mr. Wolfenbarger
contrasted the amounts wasted for
liquor with those devoted to the pur-
poses of education and religion: that
six times as much was spent for liquor
as for sclrnole, six dollars to drag
humanity down for one dollar to raise
and save the fallen. He commented
favorably upon the Provincial law for
closing up the barrooms on Saturday
nights at 7 o'ciock,as saving thousands
of dollars for legitimate trade. What
the prohibitionists desired, however,.
was that, when the saloons dosed they
should not open again until the reser.
remotion morning, when the liquor,
seller will be called up for ,judgment.
The Voice : If the cholera should
be quarantined,how much more should
the saloon be quarantined, which,
secording to Gladstone, produces more
evil than war, pestilence and famine
combined..

I know he is small, said the woman,

There was a twinkling in the boy's

again. A partner in the firm volun-

what they wanted with Buell a boy—
he wasn't bigger than a pint of cider.
But, after consultation, the boy was
set to work.
A. few days later, a call was made
on the boys in the store for some one
to stay all night. The prompt re-
sponse of the little fellow contrasted
well with the reluctance of others. In
the middle of the night, the merchant

Scrofula is more especially than any of
a hereditary disease, and for this simple
reason : Arising' from, impure and insuttici-

lymphatics, which are cotupoosd of white
tissues;there is a period of foetal life when
the whole body consists of white tissues,
and therefore the unborn child is especially
susceptible to this dreadful disease. But
there is it remedy for scrofula. whether

Peva people give propo' ears to their
shoes. They come in damp, tired,
cold, maybe, and possibly not in the
beat of temper, fling their shoes off
impatiently, get into slippers quick as
possible and sit down to rest, forget-
ting that their shoes''t will be in a
scarcely wearable condition by next
morning. If everybody t would invest
in a couple of quarts of good clean
oats, and keep Them in a clean bag in
the dressing room, he would have at
band the means of putting his shoes
into excellent order w'itii very little
trouble and no_ costs to speak of. As
$oon as the shoes are token off* lace
or button bp and fill them about two.'
thirds fall of oats, then tie in a hand-
kerchief a parcel of oats as large as
can be prasesd into ;tire top of the
shoes to till the remelting 5paer•, and
put the shoes atvrty utitti wanted. The
cats absorb the moisture from the
shoes, mid in absorbing it they swell
considerably. Tlie constant pressure
on the leather keeps tile shoe in con -
slant shape and prevents that uncoil'.
