The Woman's Federation of Philan- thropic and Chrsittan societies of the city held, its first meeting since its permanent organization, yesterday afternoon. A letter from Hiss Ada O. ,woet, president of the municipal language, of Chicago, was read. Tho writer told the women to particularly avoid putting cranks in the foreground of this work. This letter was listened to in com- plete silence, and had evidently put some of the equal suffragists who were present to thinking, for at its concha - sum one of them arose and asked what a crank was. I want to know what a orank is? said she. I am called a crank. Mrs, i3yron Sherry arose ands ex- plained that a crank, according to her theory, was one who . was ridiculous in the judgment of another person. It is a test, she said, of a person's moral and intellectual strength. The saloon keeper considersthe temperance woman a crank, the frivolous woman thinks the woman who belongs to a sewing society a crank and the society woman considers the equal suffragist a crank. All who inaugurate great reforms are called cranks. It you are afraid of being called a crank, you don't belong here, where people want to do earnest work and fight time-honored evails. Many offered their definitions of the word crank. .A. hard-working euf- fra; ist and zealous W. 0. T. U. woman considered it an honor to be called it crank because it was a sy- nonym for making things go. It was finally decided that a cranky crank should be avoided by the federa• tion, and by tins title was meant a per- son who had a superhundance of zeal without ,judgment. -- Icausas City Times.
