The Walton Women's Institute
met in the community hall on
Wednesday evening. The
President, Mrs. Allan McCall,
presided with MrseBill Humph-
ries at the piano. Mrs. McCall
read a poem, "Get Involved".
They minutes were read by the
secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Ken
McDonald. 26 members an-
swered the roll call, A New
Year's resolution I've tried to
keep during 1973". There were
two visitors present. Mrs.
McDonald gave the treasurer's
report.
A gift is to be sent to the
area convention. It was decided
to have a Court Whist ladles night
on Tuesday,October 30th. Pieked
as a committee to make plans
were Mrs. Don Nolan, Mrs. Keith
Rock, Mrs. George Blake and
Mrs. George McCall.
Winter season card parties
will begin November 9th. The
hostesses are Mrs. Ernie
Stevens, Mrs. Richard Geis, Mrs.
Don Achilles and Mrs.Clarence

The girls met for their third
meeting on Tuesday evening in the
church basement. ,The roll cell

Community Hall.

was made and' the winner was
Jim parkinscin, Queens Hotel,
Seaforth-, A total of $9.1.75
was realized from the sale of
tickets. For crafts, members
did batik.
The fifth meeting was held on
Tuesday, October 16th at the
church, 19 members answered the
roll call., Ruthie Thamer read
the minutes. in the absence of
the secretary, Janis Van Vliet.
For crafts some of the girls
worked on batik while "Corrie

Fraser. Mr. Rae Houston, who

The Provincial Government
has decided on a flat rate of
$20.00 per child for Family
Allowances according to Rene
Brunelle, Ontario's Minister of
Community encl. Social Services.
New Federal Legislation allows
each Province to vary the
amounts of the Federal Allow-
ance by age or Family
size provided that 'the amount
works out to an average of $20.00
a child. Mr. Brunelle refused to
say whether families on welfare,
or mothers' allowance would re-
ceive reduced government assis-
tance to eliminate the increase.
He also told the Legislature that
the Government plans to increase
benefits on January 1st, to those
'under 65 years of age and "in
need" such as disabled people.
It will help reduee, inequities in
the current system of welfare
benefits, he said.
John White, Minister of
Treasury, economics and
Governmental Affairs, told the
Legislature that Ontario is
preparing plans to scale down
the land planning area for the
Proposed North Pickering com-
munity by as much as' 40%, if
Ottawa decides to scrap the new
International Airport proposed
for the site. About 25,000 acres
were originally designated but the
Urban planning Consultants .afe
working .on alternatives to
accommodate a cut-off of up to
10,000 • epees from the area.
Ontario has decided., e that
because the economy is
buoyant the Province will not
finance its own job creating pro-
grams to ease unemployment this
winter. Treasurer John White
told the House that predictions
are that unemployment this
winter will level off between 4.5
and 5% of the labour force com-
pared with almost .7% last winter.
If economic conditions de-
teriorate the •Government is
ready to step in with job creat-
ing incentives, Mr. White said.
Federal programs will still be
available to Ontario,Municipali-.
ties. ,
Ontario is spending an esti-
mated $300,000.00 to advertise
the Governmerit's Transit pro7
gram. The large, advertise-
ments stress that ' the pro-
gram 'means ,a choice for, every-
one. It discusses the types of
transit systems, the merits of
staggered work hours and subsi-
dies that are available • to
Municipalities to encourage
moderh transit, Gordon
Carton, Minister of Trans-
portation and Communications
told, the Legislature that the
purpose of •the . advertising,
campaign is to 1dt 'the people
know just what is happening in
connection with Government
finance an d subsidized transit.

. measures are required to in-
crease financial assistance to
mothers with dependant children,
Ontario• Labour Minister,
Fern Guindon, told the Legis-
lature that the Government is
considering an Increase in the
$1.80 an hour minimum wage but
refuse to say what it would be.
The current minimum wage in
Quebec is $2.00 and the proposed
minimum wage which will take
effect next' year in British
Columbia is $2.50.
Debate opened up on the Hydro
report this Week with Opposition
Leader, Robert Nixon; urging the
Ontario Government to ex-
propriate Ontario Hydro's new
headquarters at the first oppor-
tunity, severing all Hydro links
with developer Gerard Moog and
his Company Canada Square.
Mr. Nixon said that Mr. Moog
was obviously an attractive
person and businessman but he
had acted with deceipt and -
misuser.- the friendship 'of —
Premier William Davis on his
way to winning the lease purchase
contract for the building.

annual fowl supper November 7th.

churches to attend their Thank-
offering -meetings and the Bible
Collecting was done. Bazaar
money was handed in and will
go to the General Fund.

October meeting of the Marten
Ritchie Evening Auxiliary on
Tuesday night. Mrs. Eldon Allen
was hostess with Mrs. Bevetly
Taylor presiding. Mrs. John

from Matthew 21.
