THE PRINCESS
Of the hundreds of thousands
of Canadians who......came home
from -World War II, the most
unusual was a Canadian by adop-
tion - a horse with a distin-
guished name. She was the
Princess Louise, the mascot of a
tank regiment, the 8th Princess
Louise's New BrunsWick Hus-
sars.
The soldiers had found her on
an Italian battlefield in September
1944,- a month-old colt, wounded
and nuzzling her dead mother.
They gave her- a shot of rum,
patched her wounds, put her at
the head of the daily sick parade
until she was well. And they
gave her the name of the daughter
of Queen Victoria who had bes-
towed' her .own name on the regi-
ment many years before.
When the time came to leave
sAuna.

- Branch 156
Italy in February 1945, there were
strict orders that no mascots
were to sail. The Hussars built
•a false end in a truck, put the
Princess behind it with food and
a soldier-attendant.. And in this
way she got to France.
As long as the fighting lasted
and after peace came, she accom-
panied the unit through western
Europe. She travelled inher own
truck, marched on parades. The
soldiers were heartbroken when
they had to leave for home with,:
out her. But, after months
breaking through red tape, she"
made it to New York by liner in
March 1946.
In New Brunswick sh-e' got a
reception befitting her rank. She
wore a saddle gaily decked with
the regimental shoulder patch,
her campaign ribbons and three
wound stripes. Behind a guard
of honor and a band, she marched
through the streets of Saint John.
The mayor greeted her, in Rothe-
say, school children got time
off to greet her, in Hampton,
her biography was read from thd'
balcony of the county courthouse
and a magistrate presented a
"certificate of naturalization."
When it was all over, she
settled day* in her own private
quarters at the unit's militia
headquarters in Sussex. ,she
lived there for years, the pride
and darling of the regiment, living
as a princess should - happily
ever after.
