Classrooms Even into Grease Pits to Learn More about Family Car If a recent survey by the Automotive'Information Council is any inglication, the day may be coming when the lady of the hoirge-kffOWrarrritiM about what makes the family car tick as her husband does. The AIC 'survey shows that thousands of women across the country are flocking to the classroom and even the grease pit. They're donning coveralls (at least in some classrooms, where they are provided free) and taking a cool, calcu- lating look at that erstwhile mystery, the family car. Finding Out What Makes It Go 'They're finding-out what makes it go, what. illnesses it may be subject to, how some df these can be avoided, what to do if repairs, have to be made, how to handle emergency situations and how tq, keep the family chariot in safe operating condition. The classes, which may 'run from a single day-long ses- sion to once-a-week courses of several weeks, are being sponsored as a consumer service by an increasingly broad spectrum of the automotive industry, ranging from small independent repair shops to major car manu- facturers, from franchised dealers to manufacturers' of auto testing equipment and partg. Surprisingly, though some are sponsored nationally by manufacturers and industry groups, many seem to have sprung up independently in response to the needs' of women drivers. Goal Is Sande . Though formats and sponsorships vary, the courses all have the, same goal: to' aid he woman motorist in unterStanding her car - not necessarily to make her an expert mech- anic, but to enable her to handle minor problems and to deal confidently and de- cisively with service tech- nicians when their help is needed. Almost all of the courses offer both classroom lec- tures and, actual deon- strations in shops' and service facilities. Response has been terri- fic, sponsors 'report, • with many classes enrolling two and three times thel,,.stit- dents originally expected in turn resulting in more frequent scheduling of classes, often on a year- round basis.- • Seven-W:i. ,f'r1rgr•:un In Cedarhurst, N. Y., Mrs. Edna Freifeld, who has been an auto service technician since World War II and is the only female licensed state' auto inspector in New York, has been conducting a seven-week' pa:0gram for women motorists. It includes such subjects as brake op- eration., battery care, tire changing and emission con- trols, as well as guest ap- pearances by automotive' experts from Bronx Com- munity College and other institutions. All shop personnel are on hand for demonstrations - which also cover some of the techniques used by fast buck artists - and she re- ports that many of •her students taking the course, have stayed on for an ad- vance class she has just initiated. Among firms conducting classes for women are: Bear Manufacturing Corn- pany, in Rock Island, Illi- nois. Chrysler's Women on Wheels prOgram, now of- fered• through 260 Chrysler dealers, • 'Members of the Indepen- dent Garage Owners of America. Chances are that similar. courses are-being conducted or planned in your area. LOTS OF AIR An average automobile,. errine uses about 9;000 gal- lons of air for every gallon of gasoline. Have your air cleaner serviced regularly for top performance. WIPE OUT NOISE If you have car radio in- terference when your elec- tric windshield wipers are on, check your wiring. Improperly-grounded two- speed wipers can cause the trouble. iiiillinig 111r cm' tip the IOrist at ;.'.- IC, a 11 i 4 !!!!!! 1 IV elal,.
