Many Americans and even some Canadians were opposed to the U.S. involVement, some went so far as to express their support for the communists. It is to be hoped that since the tragic death of nine of the peace keeping force that these one time supporters of the com- munists will now realize what the American forces were up against, and why they were fight- ing for the South Vietnamese people. The 121) year old jail sits on a site which originally cost the municipality about $500. The building itself cost $23,672/ when constructed in 1841.° . It's construction was part of a deal with the government of the Province of Canada, which passed legislation setting trp an administrative area comprising Huron and some townships now in Bruce and Perth. William Day, of Goderich, lowest tenderer, got the building contract. He erected stone walls two feet thick fitm the•Mait- land River quarry and when better stone was required for the copings, Dan Lizars was dispatched to Port Huron to negotiate with the quarry there. A chapel was =thoughtfully provided in the central tower, but when it was found there was, no money for construction or rental of a courthouse, ' the chapel was assigned to the judges., The Canada Company, owner of 1,100,000 acres in the Huron Tract, grantecj the jail site, and the directors in London approved a loan of 1,300 pouhds toward construction. , The ex chapel on the top floor of the jail was soon in dis- Tuesday, April 17th. - The Ladies Auxiliary Birthday Party, everyone welcome. They moved to hold court in the dining room of the British Exchange Hotel. By late spring of 1841, almost everyoae in town and surrounding area had visited the new jail at least once. So m,.ch mud was carried 'in that Charles Slack, newly appointed jailer, obtained an order to keap visitors out. This order continued in effect for 130•years until the County opened the .„.„tail to the public in February of this year. In Edwd Jardine was hanged in this jail after being convicted of the murder of Lizzie Anderson, Forty-eight years later, on June 12, 1959, the jail received another youth, accused of a similar crime. Steven Murray Truscott had been charged With the murder of Lynne Harper near RCAF station Clinton. The old, jail has been pointed to -by various historical architects as the only one of its type left in North America and possibly the world. The Save the Jail Society hope that thrOugh continuing negotiations with the County. of Huron and the Province of Ontario , the structure can be saved from any demolition.
