But you . have eight children now
instead of just five,
And they too, have added their
part to your joys,
You have grandchildren also to
help keep you young,
There's no better medicine than
small girls and boys.
We all would like to shake your
hands, •
And wish you many more years
of married life,
Accept, from our hearts, our
congratulations,
May God grant good health and

Excessive tillage reduces yields
As it that wasn't enough, his
radiator boiled dry
On their way to have themselves
photographed,
But Harold was resourceful and
the snow proved a blessing,
For it filled up the radiator while
the two of them laughed.
For many years Harold has been
driving a truck,
Using farmers and business men
always the same,
But one thing, the hard way, he
had to find out,
A bull leads much better when
called by his name.
Your family has been' a source
of-great pride,
To you, Mary and Harold through
your married years.

Have provided laughter and love
and quite likely a few fears.
18-inch rear tires pulling a 15-.
foot cultivator tramps 20% of the
total land surface as it tills the
field once. If the field is tilled
three times, up to 60% may be
tramped by tractor tires. In
each case, weight from the trac-
tor can compress soil for sev-
eral feet Veneath the soilsprface.
This causes permanent compac-
tion, the effect of which will last
through the entire growing sea-
son and, perhaps, through the
one to follow as well. •
Although•-we. do not completely
understand how and Why compac-
tion reduces yield, research re-
sults have shown that compacted
soils retard root 'growth. As a
result, roots are prevented from
fully exploiting the soli in search
of water and mineral nutrients
for the growing plant.
By T. B, Daynard
Despite a belief that has been
common among farmers through-
out North America, a finely-frag-
mented soil surface does not ,
mean that soil conditions are
ideal for geed germination and
plant development. On the con-
trary, with many medium and fine
textured soils a finely-granulated
soil surface may mean stunted
plant growth and reduced yield.
This is particularly ,true where
this smooth surface has been at-
tained at the expense of an ex-
cessive amount of preplant till-
age. The reduced yield is a
result of the increased soil com-
paction which can result if land
is tilled beyond a certain mini-
mal amount.
With the exception of certain
primary tillage operations (e.g.
mould-board or chisel plowing),
most tillage equipment tends to
compact soil more than it loo-*
sens it. Differences do exist
among secondary tillage equip-
mpnt - a cultivator, for example,
because of its lifting action, will
do a reasonable job of preserv-
ing a looge soil structure. How-
ever, with most other tillage
equipment, such as the disc, the
weight of the machinery presses
directly onto the soil beneath,
and the result is compaction.
True, the disc does fluff up the
surface layer of the soil, but
only at the expense of the. in-
creased compaction below.
The major compaction damage
is done, not by the tillage mach-
ine, but by the tractor which pulls
it across the field. A medium-
size tractor, for example, with
MEN'S and BOYS' Blue Suedeine JOGGERS
with white stripes. $7.98
