Follow,ing Friday night's pre-
sentation of the Flying Fathers
by the Seaforth Minor Hockey
Association, the 8th annual
Knights of Columbus hockey tour-
nament, sponsored by Father Ste-
phen Eckert council 5289 of Sea-
forth, got under way at nine
o'clock on Saturday morning with
twelve teams representing seven
of the separate schools in the
council district. There weieseven
teams in the Senior division from
Mt. Carmel, Zurich, St. Josephs,
Exeter, Seaforth, St. Coliirnban
and Dublin. Teams competing in
the Junior division were from
Dublin, St. Columban, Seaforth,
Zurich, and. Mt. Carmel.
There was good keen competi-
tive spirit displayed by all the
players setting the tone for good
fan entertainment throughout the
two days of competition..
The 12:30 game on Sunday
marked the start of the final
round of play." In the Jr. "B"
divisipn, St. Columban took a
decisive win from Mt. Carmel
blanking them 8-0 for the Jr.
"B" championship, At 1:30 Dub-
lin and Exeter played off for the
Sr. "B" championship. Dublin
completely out-chased their op-
ponents scoring 14 times while
denying Exeter any'goals whatso-
ever, and won the Sr. "B" tro-
phy.
The Jr. ',A" final game got
underway at 2:30 and saw Zurich
and Seaforth facing off. Again a
one-sided score developed and
Seaforth went down to defeat by
a score of 6-0. Zurich was then
presented the trophy for Jr."A"'
competition by the tournament's
founder Vincent Lane.
The final game of the 2 days of
competition started at 3:30 when
St. Columban and Seaforth Sen-
iors played the toughest game of
the day for the _Senior "A"
championship. In the first per-
iod of the game it looked like
Seaforth would run away with the
game opening up a 3-0 lead and
it seemed as though the St. Col-
umban players would give up as
the Seaforth boys were skating
strongly. The second period was
only 2 minutes old when St.
Columban began to score and
eventually closed the gap to one
goal and threatened to tie the
score, but Seaforth kept skating
hard and scored again in the 2nd,
period to take a 4-2 lead. The
third period saw the St. Columban
boys tie the score with goals at
7:11 and 8:59 and even up the
game, At 16:46 Seaforth again
'flashed the red light and held
on to the narrow margin till the
final bell and were presented
the trophy for Sr. "A" competi-
tion.
The K of C tournament commit-
tee expressed appreciation to all
who had helped and co-operated
to make the tournament a
success.
The Kings, who captured first
place in the Seaforth Industrial
Hockey League regular season,
are now only one game away froni
the championship by virtue of
their 5 - 3 come from behind
victory over the Blues on Sun-
day night.
The game was a close-check-
ing affair right from the opening
faceeoff. Danny Muir gave the
Blues a 1 - 0 lead as he scored
the only- goal of the first period.
However, the Kings came back
with the only two goals in the
second stanza to take a 2 - 1
lead going into the third. Steve
Eckert and Jack Groothius were
the marksmen.
The Blues came out strong
in the third frame and regained
the lead as Bill Pinder and Ken
Wright pumped goals by Kings
goaltender Moe Huard to make
the score 3 - 2. Sin McLean
tied the game for the Kings at
the midway mark as he was left
uncovered in front of the net and
deflected Bill Boshart's center-
ing pass from the corner pa.st
Blues' netmlnder Gary Mont-
gomery. Jack Groothius shot the
Kings ahead at the fifteen minute
mark as the Blue defence seemed
to weaken. It was Groothius'
second tally of the game.
With just over a minute re-
maining Gary Nicholson let go
a drive from the blueline which
Gord Dick deflected into the goal-
post and the rebound came out
again to an uncovered Dale Ken.,
nedy who fired it home to make
the score 5 - 3. Both goal-
tenders turned in strong perfor-
mances and had little chance
on the shots that eluded them.
The Blues had one tough break
as defenceman Gary Betties had
what appeared to be a goal, only
to have referee Hugh Flynn dis-
allow it as he claimed Betties
steered the puck .Jn with his
chest.
Nine penalties, were called
in the game with the Kings pick-
ing up seven of them.
