ger to humans and animals drink-.
ing the water. Phosphorus fer-
tilizer applied to soil can be
a pollution hazard to surface
waters, particularly where soil
erosion occurs. Potassium is
not considered a pollution hazard
at the present time.
The only way to know what
your fertilizer program should be
is to soil test regularly or, in
the case of certain fruit crops,
to use leaf analysis. Careful
use of fertilizer can save you
money.

Song writers and poets
through the ages have been
writing about the beauty of the
"home." Yet few of us today
sing the praises of "Home,Sweet
Home." In this day of mass
communications and transporta-,
tion, many say that the tradi-
tional idea of "home" is gone
forever. "Home" to many of
them is just a place to sleep
and eat.
But this is not the truth!
The home is still the center of
love, learning, and happiness for
people who knOw and understand
the real and important values of
life. The home is a place of
rest - not just physical rest,
but a place for spiritual and emo-
tional rest. The home is 'a place
of nourishment - for the body,
soul, and mind.
The lyrics of a recent song
said: "once there was a way
to get back home." Only those
lyrics are wrong. There still
is a way, if we only try to seek
it. It is available arid it is
right under our noses. It starts
with love and its goal is hap-
piness. You can start right now.
Turn your house into a home,
through love and faith.

Some Ontario soils are
naturally well-supplied with po-
tassium in forms available to
plants. A few appear to be
naturally high in phosphorus. Our
better farmers have been ferti-
lizing their soils for years and
not all of this fertilizer has been
removed by crops. ,The result
is, many farms are rich in plant-
available' phosphorus and po-
tassium. And then there's an
unfortunate tendency for farmers
with fertile soil to use more
fertilizer than those with infer-
tile soils.
The farmer who uses less
fertilizer than he needs can be
expected, over a long term, to
produce lower yields and/or low
quality crops.
But what about the farmer
who uses more fertilizer than
he needs? There has been a
tendency to think he is simply
being safe by avoiding defi-
ciencies and that the use of

extra fertilizer is "insurance".
Like Insurance, the extra ferti-
lizer has an annual cost. But
quite unlike insurance, it gives
little protection from serious.
unusual losses.
Most fertilizer recommenda-
tions provide for a little more
nutrients than are required to
increase yields, just to keep the
soil fertility level from dropping.
Extra fertilizer beyond that re-
commended will therefore rare-
ly return .a profit. A crop fat-
ure due to some other factor
such as dry weather or a poor
stand is not likely to be pre-
vented by the use of extra fer-
. tilizer.
The use of more ferti-
lizer than the crop needs can
cause considerable harm. On
fruit and vegetable crops and to-
bacco, excessive use of ferti-
lizers, particularly nitrogen fer-
tilizers, can lower quality. Qua-
lity can be lowered in field crops
as well, but usually only if rates
are quite extreme.
Recent research by the De-
partment • of Land Resource
Science on three differedt soils
showed that phosphorus ferti-
lizers markedly reduced the zinc
content of corn leaves. Where
the soil is well-supplied with
zinc, this will cause little or no
problem. A number of Ontario
soils are low in zinc, however
and on these soils care should
be taken to apply only the phos-
phorus fertilizer that is needed.
Zinc deficiency can result in a
loss in yield and profit. Zinc
fertilizer can be applied to cor-
rect the deficiency but it is less
expensive to stop applying phos-
phorus fertilizer where It is not
needed. Some soils are so high
in phosphorus that none may be
needed for many years.
Potassium fertilizers, ap-
plied to the same three soils,
reduced the magnesium content
of corn leaves. Escessive ap-
plications reduced it by nearly
50% on all three soils. On a
soil low in magnesium, a serious
deficiency can result, with the
accompanying loss in yieldand
profit. Magnesium fertilizers
can be added but it is simpler
and much less expensive to stop
applying the potassium where it
is not needed. Very large mag-
nesium applications are required
to compensate for excess potas-
sium.
Another reason to be care-
ful is to protect our surface and
groundwater from pollution. Ex-
cess use of nitrogen fertilizer
can cause increased levels of
nitrate in the groundwater, a dan-
