23-77-tf The Canadian Red Cross
Water Safety Service has de-
signed a survival swimmingpro-
gramme to help people who can't
swim learn how to protect them-
selves in the water. Under the
guidance and- protection of Red
Cross trained instructors non-
swimmers learn many practical
'techniques of survival swimming
like rescue breathing, drown-
proofing, reaching. assists and
proper use of life-jackets. In
some areas of Canada the Red
Cross Water Safety Service uses
portable pools to help teach water
safety to people in isolated com-
munities where the drowning rate
is sometimes eleven times higher
than the rate in more settled
parts of Canada.
My sincere appreciation to
everyone who remembered mein

S T E M WATER-BUTTERCUP or Water Crowfoot — This
aquatic- plant is found commonly in marshes
across Canada. The small, five-petalled yellow or
white flowers may frequently carpet the surface
of the water over a considerable area. The sub-
merged leaves are divided into many slender,
finger-like parts which form a lacey network
extending down from the surface of the water:
There are a number of varieties of Water-Butter-
cup, differing only slightly. In some the leaves
droop and mat when the plant is taken from the
water; in others they remain stiff and keep their
form.
