For many years the CAS has indertaken to provide Christmas assistance to families needing help with the provision of •pur- chase vouchers for Christmas dinner and gifts for family mem- - tio, s 1 ,. _,, , .,...• berg, In 1971, apps'Oxintately two IliPuked :Willies and over seven hundred children were assisted, thanits to the te.uprous corn rniMitY donations of funds and toys, "It was largely due to the problems of directing such a large scale effort from our office in Goderich that the decision was made to set up a Christ- mas Bureau in each of the five towns in the County," noted Bruce R. Heath, CAS Local Director, "along with the, fact we .were not availing ourselves of a wealth of volunteer support and assistance. Our Christmas projects are essentially a co- ordination of the efforts of various local community groups and interested individuals in a combined volunteer effort." Meeting the needs of the children and families referred to the Children's Aid is depen- dent on the response of the people of Huron County. Already we have received donations and eommitt- ments of assistance from many community groups, and it is hoped that as many as possible will again assist us this year, Mr. Heath said and went on: , ' In many communities, church and service groups have ORIENTAL HAM CASSEROLE 2 cups cubed cooked smoke.. ham 1 tablespoon lard or drip- pings 1 package (9 ounces) frozen Frenched green beans, cooked 1 can (4 to 6 ounces) water chestnuts, drained and thinly slick! 1 tablespoon butter' 1 tablespoon flour 1/2 cup milk 1/2 • cup dairy sour cream 1/3 cup cracker crumbs 4 teaspoons melted butter Brown ham cubes in lard or drippings. Pour off drippings. Add green beans and water chest- nuts. Melt 1 tablespoon butter or 'margarine in a small sauce- pan. Stir in flour. Add milk. Cook, stirring contantly, until thickened. Combine sauce, sour cream and soy sauce and add to ham mixture. Cook until just heated through. Pour mixture into a greased 1 1/2 quart cas- serole. Combine crumbs and 4 teaspoons butter or margarine. Sprinkle crumb mixture over ham mixture. Place casserole under broiler 2 to 3 minutes. 4 to 6 servings. TURN ONS always taken it upon theln.selYes to 'engage in Christmas protects similar to our.owii. Where such activities are already in exis- tence, these same groups would again be responsible for people , known to them or referred to them. In such cases, we would act only as a clearing house, or possibly share in the local- pro- ject as appropriate. In, setting up a Christmas Bureau, it has been our desire to make the best possible use of the voluntary dollar and donation." Any authorized representa- tive of a church or community group may check our referral index at our office in Goderich, or with the local co-ordinator. Similarity families needing as- sistance can contact us directly or be referred by a community group or interested individual." "We are particularly de- sirous of assistance with toys and games, and articles of clothing such as mitts, scarfs, and caps for all age groups. Both new toys, and used arti- cles in good condition, are pres- ently needed, along with appro- priate gifts for the teenager. "Last year, many people out doing their own Christmas shop- ping made it a point to purchase one extra gift for a child, or a game which could be used by a family group, and donated these to the Society. It is our hope that many people who are not Affiliated with various community service groups, will consider those less fortunate than them- selves and take it as a personal responsibility or charitable ges- ture to help in some small way.
