, The feeders and waterers are
hung on pulleys attached to the
ceiling so they can be raised when
the floor is being cleaned.
"It looks very promising,"
he said.,
"The manure dries •as it is
dropped and can be moved out
in dpst form at the end of the
broilers' eight-week rearing
period.. The, brooder is cleaned
at the end of every crop. There
is a reduction in labor that re-
flects in total production costs."
At least two commercial poul-
try operations are trying the new
heating system.
"we have quite a bit to
learn aboirt'this," he said.
"We're not sure what temp-
erature is best for the birds.
We're trying a temperature of 88
degrees Fahrenheit at floor level
and 05,degrees at one inch above
the floor."
Temperature is probably the
most critical factor in the new
system. With heating throughout
the entire floor, the temperature
is 100 per cent controlled.
In conventional brooders, the
bird controls itsr own surround-
ing temperature by moving near-
er to or further away from the
heat -source.
In the first trials, the pipes
were spaced"one foot apart; how-
ever, six-inch spacings" and
values in the pipes will be tried
for varied distances between heat
flows,• such as six inches, 12
inches 6r1:13 inches.
,"This will give some in-
dication of how heat sensitive the
birds are," Mr.,Proudfoot sai.d
