that conflict, While at Montreal's

surgeon. Increasing concern with
social and political issues took
him to Spain In 1936 where he
organized Canadian medical aid
for the Loyalist troops and set
up the world's first mobile blood
transfusion unit. Two years
later he went to China and until
his death worked tirelessly as

side I'm an evangelist. On my
father'S side I have a compul-
sion to do, to act".
Within two years of Norman's
birth the pastor was transferred
to Beaverton, and over the next
two decades served congregat-
ions in Blind River, Aylmer,
Sault Ste. Marie, Toronto add
Owen Sound. These frequent
moves hampered Norman's edu-
cation, but nonetheless he
graduated from Jesse Ketchum
Public School in Toronto and
from Owen Sound Collegiate
Institute.
In 1909 Norman entered the
University of Toronto, graduat-
ing thee years later_with an Arts
degree. His admission' the fol-
lowing year to that institution's
medical school fulfilled a dream
cherished since childhood of
emulating his grandfather, the
Toronto surgeon. His studies
were interrupted by the outbreak
of the First World War. He
enlisted immediately and as a
stretcher bearer served with
tae Canadian Army Medical
Corps in France until he was
injured ..at the Battle of•Ypres.
Sent home to recover, he
decided to complete his medical
training before returning " to
active service.
Following the War he was
demobilized in Britain_ and for
"three years interned in London
hospitals. In 1923 he passed
his F.R.C.S, examinations at the
University 'of Edinburgh.
The following year he re-
turned to North America, went
to Detroit and opened an office
in one of. the poorer, sections of
that city. At first most of his
patients were poor and frequently
unable to pay for his services,
but gradually his skill in
surgery brought patients from Movie;-"School For se- eal Parts of the city., His prac-
crets" Richard Atten- tice became lucrative and large,
and by society's standards, Be-
thune was a successful man.
But, Bethune's standards
were his own. Since childhood
he had nurtured the ideal that
doctors should be like monks.."
going about in sandals and bare
garments". They had a ....
"holy purpose ... to guard and
resurrect the human body." The
gap which he saw between this
ideal and what he considered
the reality of a medical profes-
sion devoted primarily to finan-
cial gain repelled him and made
him extremely critical of his
colleagues. lie mocked there for
making the size of their income
the measure of their success as
doctors.
'Disillusioned and cynical, he
immersed himself in his prac-
tice. He worked too hard, and
Within two arears he was.stricken
with tuberculosis, then a prac-
tically:: incurable ,disease.
went to the Calydor Sanatorium
at Gravenhurst but within a month
was offered admittance t 0 the
famed Trudeau Sanatorium at
Saranac Lake, New. York: He
arrived there expecting only a
slow death. Instead he found a
miraculous recovery through the
use of artifical pneinnothqrax.
This form of thereapy for T.B.
was then still in the experimen-
tal stages, but at Bethune' in-
sistence it was used on him.
Two months after his first
treatment, he was pronounced fit
to leave Trudeau.
His discharge marked the be-
ginning of a new career. lie
was determined that' he would do
everything within his power to
give to others the miraculous
cure he,. had experienced. After
studying for almost two years at
the New York State tuberculosis
hospital, he went to work as a
thoracic surgeon under Dr. Ed-
ward Archibald, an expert in
the field, at the Royal Victoria
Hospital in Montreal. Within a
short time he was also teaching
at McGill University. ,
With characteristic _fervour
Bethune threw himself into his
task. He studied hard and ex-
perimented freely, often on him-
self , in order to develop new
cures and techniques. One of his
prime concerns was the neces-
sity of utilizing the latest. ad-
vances in technology for surgery.
Impatient with surgical instru-
ments which he declared to be
outdated and useless, he often
designed his own. So successful
was he as an inventor that the
Philadelphia firm of Pilling and
Sons, manufacturers of surgical
instruments purchased from him
the exchisive right to manufac-
ture his inventions:
