This was the game , that I
had been waiting to write about
all year long as the Merchants
played their finest game of the
season when they met Port El-
gin in the lake town on Sunday.
They won the game 13 -5
and male only 2 errors and
showed good base running - good
hustle and good sportsmanship.
The boyse played the game of
baseball as it should be' played
and as far as I am conceined
they made me and the fans from
Seaforth' proud of their euven-
lls team. /
The Merchants were behind
and there were a few close calls
but they kept playing the game
and came through with a big win
by a score of 13 - 5.. The
first inning was scoreless for
Seaforth and Port Elgin picked
one, run.
In the second inning each
team picked up a run. In the
third Port Elgin picked' up an-
other run and Seaforth was shut
out. The fourth was scoreless
again for both teams. The Mer-
chants shut out the Port again
in the fifth and picked up 3 runs
to put them in the lead. , The
sixth was seereless. In the
seventh the Merchants once again
rallied for 5 runs and held the
Port 'scoreless. Another rally
in the eighth with 3 runs and none
for the home team.
In the ninth Seafdrth picked
up 1 run, and Port Elgin 2 to
end -the game. Although every-
one played well there were 2
standout fielding ball players and
they were Dennis Campbell and
Ray Mennell. Mennell played
third base and he did an out-
standing job there. First base-
man Campbell made the catch
of the game when he scooped up
a hard hit ground ball to his
right between first and second
and pan back to first to make
the put out. This catch seemed
to inspire the entire, team as
Campbell up until this game had
not been playing to the best of
his ability. Jerry Feeney played
at their next home game - Sat
29 July - 6:30 PM Optimist
rec grounds when Port Elgin
comes to town.

St. ColUmban out hustled Till-
sonburg last Sunday in rain and
hot weather and came up with
a 4 - 2 win.
The home team • was really
up for the game determined to
get two points to give them boast
in the standings.
Tillsonburg got a strong off-
ence together as soon asthe open-
ing, whistle had blown and almost
beat the 8t., Columban's defense
on several close occasions. St.
Columban got a defence
together at about the 10 minute
mark of the first half and start-
ed setting up the forwards and
turned the attack around.
At the 15 minute mark Harold
Ressling !muse carried the ball
In and set up Brian Melady with
a perfect tip pass , as Melady
fired the ball into the goal. Till-
sonbury wasn't able to put to-
-get-her any off ense and 5 minutes
later Larry Kale crossed a ball
from the right side which was
picked up and blasted' in by Tom
Murray. Offense threats were
shared by both teams for the
remainder of the half.
Down two goals Tillsonburg
wasn't discouraged as they kept
pressing and at the 15 minute
mark of the 2nd half finally
broke 'through the St. Columban
defense and fired a quick shot
into the right hand corner past
goalie , Paul O'Reilly. Tillsonburg
