STAFFA #1 '4-H
The Staffa 41 4-H Garden
Club met Saturday morning at
the home of the leader. The roll
call was answered by all mem-
bers "One vegetable: in my gar-
den that requires thinning." Mrs.
Jeffrey discussed how to stake
tomatoes, weed control, trans-
planting and thinning, insect and
disease control, proper land-
scaping of 4awns and drivewayS.
In order to have attractive home
surroundings it is necessary to
design and plan before purchas-
ing shrubs and plants. The basic
principles of 'landscape design
are simplicity, • unity, balance,
accent, proportion and scale,
she said. The next meeting will
be held in July.

Celebrate
anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. GordonStaples,
RR #2, Dublin were honored on
the occasion of their Silver Wed-
ding Anniversary by a surprise
party -sponsore_d and attended by
forty friends and neighbOurs- at
the home of Mr.and Mrs. Joseph
A. Lane, on Wednesday evening
June 7.
The evening was spent by pro-
gressive euchre, presentation of
gifts and lunch." An address of
" congratulations was read by Mary
Lou Lane and Mr. and Mrs.
Staples were presented with an
11 piece set of stainless steel
cookware and a, blanket.
On Sunday, June 11 a High
Mass was offered for their in-
tentions by Fr. P.A. Oostveen,
pastor of St. Columban Church
and attended by their family and
relatives. Also arranged and kept
as a surprise by their family
was , 'a get-together which fol-
lowed at their home in the after-
noon. 'and evening, and also a
dinner at the Dublin Hotel at
5 p.m. They were the recip-
ients of many useful and varied
household gifts:
Mr. and Mrs. Staples were
married in Waterloo, Ontario on
June 7, 1947.
They have a family of seven
daughters and one son: Linda,
Mrs. Frank Fischer, Strafford-
ville; Sharon, Stratford; Barb-
ara (Mrs. Douglas Kittmer) RR
#3, Lakeside; Jerry, W lima, Lor-

at home. They also halve one
grandchild.
Mr. Staples is the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. John Staples
of Blyth while Mrs. Staples is
the former Catherine Ducharme,
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Auguste Ducharme, St. Colum-
ban.

WOMENS LEAGUE
The last meeting of the sea-
son of the„Catholic Womens'
League was held last week in the
Parish Hall with 15 members
present. Father Oostveen was
present and opened and closed the
meeting-with.prayer, "Thank you
notes" were read fiona
Dominic Murray, past president,
and from Leo Hagen. It was
announced that Rev. Father Spen-
cer is the new director in London
diocesce succeeding Rev. Father
Hennessey who resigned. The
altars will be cared for by Mrs.
Lewis Coyne and Mrs.-Frank
Ryan. Mrs. V.J.La.ne was named
to visit the sick. Final plans
were made for the June tea and
bingo. Mrs. Leonard O'Rourke
gave the report of the diocesan
convention held in Sarnia.. The
411 girls showed their sleepwear,
which they had made.
Miss Nell Doyle, London,
visited. Michael Doyle and Ted
Doyle.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Smith, Ac-
ton, and Mr. and Mrs. David
Regier, Kitchener, and their fam-
ilies, visitied Mr. and Mrs. Al-
bert Cronin.
Mr. and Mrs. V.J.Lane were
in London recently, attending the
baptism of Michelle Marie Mac-
Donald.

Walking down the street with
a friend one day, a professor
passed a large fish market where
a fine catch of codfish, with
mouths wide-open and eyes star-
ing, were arranged in a row.
The professor stopped, looked at
them, and, clutching his friend
by the arm, exclaimed: "Heav-
ens, that reminds me - I should
be teaching a class nowt"
