THE LEGION
Last Saturday, May 6th ap-
proximately 225 attended the
Awards Night and Dinner at the
Legion Hall in Seaforth.
The President, Comrade
Cleave Coombs opened the pro-
ceedings, followed by the stng-
trig of "0 Canada", accompan-
ied on the piano by Comrade
Bob -Spittal; this. was followed
by a toast to fallen Comrades

C 2. A toast to the Queen was
proposed by Comrade Gordon
Scott,, 1st Vice President of
Branch 156. The Padre Comrade
Bob Spittal then said Grace.
4-- A delic-lous roast beef din-
ner was served by the Ladles
Auxiliary, waiting on tables were
members of the ,Seaforth Dis-
trict High School Band.

Coombs welcomed the large gath-
ering, Past President Comrade

of Seaforth, brought greetings
from the town, and recalled the
history and progress of Branch
156. Comrade Gordon Scott
thanked the Ladies Auxiliary for
the delicious meal, and Presi-
dent Cleave Coombs thanked the
girls of the Seaforth District
High School Band for waiting on
tables.
The presentation of awardS
was 'conducted by Comrade Dave
Capperauld, 2nd Vice President
of the Ontario Provincial Com-
mand, assisted by Comrade Allan
Nicholson chairman of the pro-
ceedings.
One Forty _year -pin was
awarded to Comrade Ned Bos-
well. The recipients of twenty-

After •these awards were
made, Comrade Allan Nicholson
called on the District COmmarrder
Comrade Rollie „Russel to pre-
sent the 'News Media AWard to
• Comrade Andy McLean, Editor of
the Huron Expositor. Comrade
Russel explained that this was
the highest 'award that the Royal
Canadian L.egio n could bestow
on a Newspaper. After reading
a letter from the President of
the Royal Canadian Legion, Corn-
rade Redmond Roche, the Dist-
rict Commander presented the
News Media Award to The Huron
Expositor, for its outstanding sup-
port and coverage, of Legion acte
"vines for the past many-years.
In-acknowledging the award Com-
rade Andy said it had been made
possible by the contribution and
assistance of the Brandh Public
Relations chairmen.- incitiding
.Comiadea Jack Holland and
D'Orlean Sills and the present
P.R.O. John Baker. He said the
Staff of the Huron Expesitor would
appreciate and' he -proud of the
award.
The next highlight of the
evening was the presentation of
a Certificate of Merit to Corn-
rade Peggy Coombs, President
of the Ladies Auxiliary. This
,award was for tier many years of
outstanding service to the Branch
and the Ladies Auxiliary and for
devotion to all her duties.
Her Certificate of Merit was
presented by Cbmrade , Evelyn
Carrol C 1 Zone Commander for
the Ladies Auxiliary. In reply
to the award 'Comrade Peg
Coombs said this was indeed
an unexpected honour and that
she was deeply moved, She
praised the members of the Lad-
ies Auxiliary for the help that
they had given her and that she
was,sure that they would be
justlyproud of the award, as
they had helped her immeas-
urably.
Comrade President Cleave
Coombs asked the Sergeant
at Arms to retire the colours
and had Comrade Allan Nichol-
son report to the Sergeant' at
Arms, after which ,he was -
marched up with the colours to
receive the- Legion's highest
award, 'the Meritorious Service
Medal. Corn rad.e Jack Eisler. read
the citation, and reviewed the
service record of domraCie Nith-
Olson and declared that he indeed
was Mr. Legion himself. Comrade
Dave Capperauld, Proviricial and
Vide President then pinned the
Medal on comrade Al.
In his-reply To the presenta-
tion Comrade Nicholson said that
he was completely taken by sur-
prise, and shaken but that ..he
really appreciated the ho r and
was so pleased that -- h good
friend Comrade Dave Capperauld
was the one to present him with
the Medal. He added, that he
appreciated the support given him
by the Branch and the Ladies Aux-
•iliary. •

The chairman then called on
the District Commander Com-
rade Rollie Russel to introdke
the guest speaker, Comrade Dave
Capperauld, Comrade Capper-
auld was born in Renfrew, Scot-',
land in 1922, served with the
Royal Air Force, served in the
U.K." and Africa-, came to Canada
in 1949, joined the Royal Can-
adian Legion in 1956, was Pres-
ident of Branch 120 Georgetown
for three years, became Deputy
Zone Commander of Zone B 7
in 1963 and Zone Commander of
Zone- B 7 in 1965 also Deputy
District Commander of District B
also in 1965 was elected to 3ici
Vice President of ProVihcial
Command in 1969 and to 2nd
V ice President Provincial Com-
mand .fri 1971. He was married
'in Paisley, Scotland in 1948. His
wife's name is' Elma, they have --
three daughters, aged 20, 16
and 7. •...

Comrade- Capperauld spoke
on organization and the progress
of the Legion...He.. spoke_ of the.
contribution that the Legion had
made tb the country through their
service to the communities all
across Canada. He went on to
say that instead of handing over
our obligations• to the, young
people,. we should have them
assist us wifh*Them, Ifelhought
that a good many of us would be
around a long time yet to handle
the reins.
