Kinburn or Constance? by the Sandy McDonald Goderich Signal by the Buchanans about three years ago, the chumh is now used far non-denorninatiqual SO- vices each Sunday.) Mr.Armstrong's grandfather, who erninigrated from Dumfries., Scotland, in 1852, laid the stone foundation for the general store. His recollections of Kinburn's earlier times included Suther- land's blacksmith shop, The post office, from whence Kinburn derived its second name, "Constance", was located adjacent to the, blacksmith shop. Other flourishing enterprises during Kinburn's "horse and buggy days" were Yugall's car- riage shop and Cole's sawmill. Mm. Armstrong remembered Kinburn's cheese factory where her uncle, "Pete" Papineau, used to make delectable cheddar. "I used to stop there on my way' home from school to get curds", she reminisced. Naturally, Kinburn had another landmark, typical of Huron county hamlets years ago. It was Brownlee's hotel-tavern. in Star. chosen by postal officials was ""Constance". Although the post office de- partinent'of British North Amer- ica officially designated "Milburn", Huron County, as "Constance", it still appears 'today on highway direction signs as "Kinburn". As if to dispel any lingering doubt you might have as to its official title, two large green signs at the hamlet's northern and southern limits boldly proclaim its title, KINBURN. However, Kinburn's name of old has not been completely laid to rest. A 1964 Ontario road map, issued by the Imperial 011 company, has the Hullett township community marked, and- named "Constance". Provincial road maps printed more recently though, do not mark "Kinburn" (Huron County) by either name. Mrs. Fred Bughanan, who runs the general store at Kinburn, here in Western On- tario, testifies to an odd occur- rence: "I've had tourists come in here and ask for people we've never heard of and we've lived in the community all our lives. It turns out they're' looking for residents of " the Kinburn 300 miles east of here." The earliest general store in Kinburn was -destroyed by fire about five years ago. For many years it was owned and operated by, the Stephensons. Mrs. Buchanan, and her hus- band, Fred, established the.. present Kinburn general store about three years ago. It is -located in a two-story brick building, at-the south-west corner of the hamlet. Erected in 1907, it was once' the meeting hall for a local branch of the Canadian Order of Foresters. An elderly, couple who are lifelong residents of Kinburn, have , vivid memories of its earlier days. They are Mr. and Mrs. Howard Armstrong who occupy a tidy brick 'farm home on the seventh concession. of HUllett, a quarter-mile west of Mrs. Armstrong remembers when' her grandmother, (Mrs. Rogerson) laid the cornerstone for the Kinburn Methodist Church, built in 1894. (Purchased township where he settled, an "t, identical name. However, a "Kinburn", near Ottawa, had already been named (possibly by a Scotsman who had ernmigrated from the district as Stephenson). Consequently,, when a post office at the Hullett township hamlet was opened in 1857, it had to be renamed, and the name For a while, Kinlnirn ats,o had the services of a medical doctor. Kinburn (Huron County) may again "get on the map", ifplanS, now under way by the Ontario Lands and Forests Department, are completed. Last year -a "lands and forests" spokesman announced that a 6,000-acre block of land in the center of Hullett town- ship was being purchased for use as a wildlife sanctuary. Al- ready some 100 pheaSants have been released there. Ifs wild fowl population win be increase-i Sometime within the next several days when Huron county conseryation -of- ficer, 'Roy Bellinger, will re- lease about 50 mated pair of Canada geese. Kinburn may eventually become synonymous ( and con- fused ihth ) the 'wild-life sanc- tuary at Kingsville:4 The problem arose more than *4 a century ago when Huron County was being settled. It seems an early einmigrant to Huron county by the name ofStephenson wished to honor' his native parish of "Kinburn.
