He is a ,great salesman and a very far- seeing businessman," said War- reri„ adding laughingly, "so far- seeing, that lie owns, more of the business than I do!" Warren also has plans to move his Ayr dealership to new prem- ises, in the village of Ayr. Sales. ancl. Profits have followed in line with the expan- sion of business for Warren and Marlen. In 1955 when they took over the busineps, the dealership was doing $78,000 cash differ- ence volume. In theiirst 10 months of 1967, the two dealerships did a total of more than $1. million, with roughly 1700,000 of this total coming from the Ayr business and $300,000. - odd from the Galt dealership. Staff play a very important part in the two dealerships."It's" jiit„ plain good management to treat Your staff well," said War- ren. "You get your return in hard work, long'service and loy- alty." The Vincent brothers also carry rainy short-lines. They believe that short-lines compli- ment their main-line. Some' of the lines are Falcon Equipment,, George White, H. L. Turner and Truck & Tractor. "Carrying short-lines doesn't interfere with our In franchise." stated Warreil."Thzt one disadvantage of short-lines is that you have to stock ,-~a larger inventory of parts. But if you're going to sell short- lines you have too be able to service them as well. But our main-lfne 'still domes first.. I believe dealers should, always • be loyal to their,, yarent company." 'One point Warren asked me to raise was the smaller dealer. "When we first took over the business, I used to look up to the big dealer and made my aim to be as big myself one day by expanding the business. .... But now that the dealership has grown so much, I often wonder what the small dealer thinks of Vin- cent Farm they - whether or not they think we are trying' to tramp on their dealership by expanding so much. "I sincerely hope this is not the impression they have be- cause I firmly believe there is a place for the small dealer, especially those who are trying to expand, I, appreciate the prob- lems small dealers have. I was one myself and I, too, had the headaches of parts, service and sates, I still have' them. But now they are bigger than ever with our larger turnover. I wondered about the-secret of Warren's success. PThere is no easy mettibd," he stres- sed. "It's all tied up in bus- iness management - good mana- gement. I don't say to , any dealer - expand. It has to be a gradual planned process. "Remember - that the more your business grows, the more your staff has to grow and your capital outlay, your service shop- and your headaches, especially when You're selling around 45 tractors. A. dealer has to be looking at his day :-to-day oper- ations and know all Sides of his business. But above all he -must be a manager._ "I've. taken advantage of all the .company courses available and 1 also attend many night courses, mostly to improve my management skills. "But 'most- of all I like the business. It's like no other I know. And I have good employee relations. My staff deserve a great amount of credit for our success. They are very effic- ient." Warren's parting words were: "Rerhember to stress that fact that a dealer must completely understand his dealer operation." Wise words frtim a man who haS built his succpsiful business on this basis.
