Ir ) , A, . - i•.,'--.- - Equipment Ltd. Ventilation contributes healthier livestock By R.C.Bradford Livestock producers should check the winter ventilation sys- tems of their buildings. Good cold weather ventilation for most livestock requires en- ough air to remove moisture. Therefore, multispeed and varia- ble speed fans used specifically for winter ventilation should also be checked. Louvers should \lz)e clean and working properly.Hea- vy loads of dirt caked on the lou- vers or fan blades canreduce the fan output seriously at low-vol- ume rates. + Fan hoods are a good invest- ment to reduce wind piessure. Thermostat setting is ex- , tremely important. Unless.fans are sequenced to come off at the right time, even the best-design- ed-systems will not operate pro- perly. Too many operators set the thermostats to engage sim- ultaneously, then over-ventila- tion results. Set the thermostats at three and possibly four settings and check their accuracy against a good thermometer. • Another bad practi6e is to shut off the manual switches to the large fans in winter, assum- ing they won't be. needed. These fans sjlould always be ready for action in case the small-moisture control fan fails. tff.this should happen, the temperature—hnd moisture would rise, thus endan- gering livestock. Frequently, there are not en- ough animals in the building to keep it warm enough. A large amount of supplemental heat is then required. To reduce this problem in a farrowing unit, the farmer might bring in his dry Sow's , These “cheap heaters" would help maintain the farroW- ing barn temperature and reduce heating costs. With only a little preventiVe maintenance and correct adjust- ment, winter troubles such as wet ceilings or unnecessarily cold, over-Ventilated buildings tan be" avoided. kg • result, livestock will be healthier and more• productive.
