was, Dr. J. R. Leitch of the God-

introduced by Mrs. Lee Flowers.
Dr. Leitchs' topic was "Emer-
gencies". Dr. Leitch emphasized
that Medical Secretaries are
looked on, in the course of their
duties, to be well versed in
emergency procedures because
of the close association with
Doctors' work. Dr. Leitch stres-
sed that often some simple pro-
cedure or knowledgable action ,
at the time of an emergency
could easily mean the saving
of a life, or the prevention.of
permanent injury if not treated
with due care and caution.
Dr. Leitch listed six head-
ings under which to be prepared
to give calm, intelligent assist-
ance. They are: Feel, Talk,
Observe, Brain and Spinal Cord,
Fractures, Wounds. Cases were
cited from a Geigy Pamphlet
on Emergencies.

GAVE ALL FOR
ADOPTED COUNTRY
Colonel Anthony VanEgrnond
an experienced soldier who came
to Canada in 1827 was to become
one of this country's foremost
pioneers. He was largely re-
sponsible for opening up Huron
County' for the early settlers.
The Governxnei.t of Upper
Canada of that day was des-
cribed as a , Family Compact ,
corrupt and • indifferent to the
needs of the people.
Colonel VanEgmond very.
much aware of the plight of the
ordinary people and disgusted
with the government's actions,
ran for a seat in the Assembly.
In this he, failed. •,
Very much against revolut-
ion but knowing something had to
be done, he reluctantly shared ,
the view of William Lyon Mac-
kenzie, that in order to achieve
responsible gevernnient, the
present government would have
to be deposed by armed , force.
William Lyon Mackenzie who
was a confirmed rebel, contacted
Colonel. VanEgmond to ask him
to command a regiment in an
attack against the Government
forces. VanEgmond accepted,
but when he arrived to take com-
mand he found that the regiment
consisted of only two hundred
armed men instead of the four
or five hundred promised.
After a 'severe quarrel with
Mackenzie, it was suggested by ,
VanEgmond that. a diversionary
tactic should be made by his
inferior force while waiting for '
reinforcements.
There.are conflicting reports.
regarding the final plan agreed
upon, however history has re-
corded the defeat of the rebel
force, and' the capture of Colonel
Van Egmond. .Not widely known
is the fact that. Colonel Van Eg-
mond could have averted capture
had he not given up his horse
tb William Lyon Mackenzie to
make his get-away.
We are told that Colonel Van-
Egmond was a wealthy mad in
his own right, but after imprison-
Ment, stripped of all his posses-
.. sion'S, he died on Dec. 30th, 183'7
a sick 'and broken man.
His heroic action against a
corrupt and wicked government
was brought to the attention of
the British authorities. The
British Government sent Lord
