ARDA Salves Many Grazing Problems

To Metric Sy tstem of a Well-run community Past-

ditions. for handlidg steers and
heifers in well-separated units.
Charges are 10 cents per pound
of gain, with a minimum of $18
per animal, and any bona fide
farmer is eligible to apply for
pasture privileges. Because un-
limited pasture is not available,
priorities are given to farmeri
operating on limited acreages.
While most ARDA pasture
committees advertise that appli-
cations • are being •received and.
deadlines for applications are
usually around February 15, do
not wait for the notice to appear.
Apply immediately at the local
office of the Ontario Department
of Agriculture and Food, so that
application form will be sent
to you as soon as available.
Eacb, pasture management
committee has its own regula-
tions which include the maxi-
mum number of entries that will
be received, the weight of the
cattle and the number of entries
to be accepted, and the inocu-

cows and calves on one of the
eight AURA community pastures
In Ontario. in this way, they can
increase their herd and increase
production of winter feed on the
hOme farm to carry them through
the winter.
ARDA community pastures
are located in Bruce, Leeds and
Victoria counties) and in the
Manitoulin Island, Temiskaming,
and Thunder Bay districts. The
operation of each pasture is the
responsibility of a committee
of local farmers who' hire a
managertto supervise the day-
* to-day work on the farm. This
includes daily inspection of the
cattle, maintenance of fences,
management of the pasture,
checking on water and salt sup-
plies and assisting with the treat-
ment of cattle when necessary.
The Victoria County ARDA
• pasture farm, near Hartley - in
,Edlon Township, is an example
rations or other treatment that
must be carried out before the
pasture season. Usually ail ani-
mals must be dehorned, treated
for black-leg and warbles, and all
males must be castrated. These
treatments should be carried out
during the winter so animals
will have recoverd before
being put out to pasture.
A warm comfortable' barn is
not usually the best place to
prepare cattle for the pasture
season. Open sheds with-access
to a yard for exercise, sunshine
and plenty of fresh air are ideal.
Aninfals that -have been exposed
to the weather during the winter
are able to stand a stretch of
cold, wet weather early in the
pasture season -
Conversion to the metric sys-
tem will be gradually taking plane
In Canada over the next few years.
Now is the time to become
familiar with the system.
One of the major advantages
of the metric system is its sim-
plicity,
Conversion to larger or
smaller units involves way
multiplication or division by units
of 10.
The meter (m) is the basit
unit of length.
Meters are divided into deci-
meters (dm), centimeters(cM),
and millimeters(mm)-- in other
words, tenths, hundredths and
thousandths.
• • Thus,
10 decimeters - ore meter
100 centimeters - one meter
1000 millimeters - one meter
Going up, the units are deca-
meters (dam), hectometers(hm)
and kilometers (km).
1 decameter - 10 meters
1 hectoineter - 100 meters
1 kilometer - 1000 meters
For area, the basic' unit is
the square peter.
A hectare (ha) is a square
with sides 100 meters long.
In volume, the basic unit is the
cubic meter.
In the metric systein, volume
or capacity is measured in liters
(1), decaliters ('dal) or hectoliters (hl).
1000 liters - 1 cubic meter
100 decaliters - 1 cubic meter
10 hectoliters - 1 cubic meter
For 'harvestieg or seeding 89
liters per hectare equals
approximately one bushel per
acre.
In practice,' the basic metric
unit of weight is the kilogram (kg),
which is equal to-,1000 grams (g),.
1 metric ton (t)- 1000 kiloefartrs
1 quintal (q) - 100 kilograms
10 quintals - 1 metric ton
The metric system, when it is
fully adopted, will affect every
area of our daily life. geeLe,
The farmer will have tb get
used to thinking of metric quin-
tals of wheat per hectare, rather
than bushels per acre.
The housewife will use grams,
not ounces, in baking -- 225
grams of granulated sugar, not'
eight ounces (one cup); five grams
of baking powder, instead of one
teaspoon.
For liquid measures, 2.3 de-
ciliters are one cup; one half a
liter is just under one pia.
Our temperature scale will,
also lie different.
Under the converted system,
we will use the centigrade rather
than the fahrenheit scale. '
very hot oven will be 230 degrees
C, not 450 degrees F as we know
it now. Normal body temperature
will be 37 degrees C.
