THIRTY-ONE 'YEARS AGo
THIS MONTH
Of the Canadians overseas,
only the Royal Canadian Navy
and the Royal Canadian Air Force
had been in action against the
enemy. Canadian Anti-Aircraft
units had fired at enemy planes
and a few Infantrymen had taken
many a pot-shot at thenf, but this
was not considered ,as being in
action. For the Artillery and
Tank units and the Infantry, It
was still a seemingly-unending
life of training.
_.-,.,..,January 5, 1941 - The
Italians surrendered the Libyan
port cif Beretta to the Australians
and the British.
- January 8 - Ottawa ordered
the registration of all Japanese-
Canadians in British Colurnhia.
- January 20 - In London,
it was announced that there had
been twenty-three thousand
eighty one killed in German air
attacks on England.
, - January 22 - The Austra-
lians completed the capture of
Tobruk in. Libya, taking twenty-
/lye thousand Italian prisoners.
- January 29 - The British.
widened the offensive against the
Italians by invading. Somaliland.
- January 31 - The 'British
defeated the Italians at Agordat
in ' Eritrea. The Italians were
still fighting loyally for their
beloved Mussolini but they were
beginning to show signs of their
defeat. However, beckuse,of their
masses they were tieing up many
British and Australian Divis-
ions. thus helping the Germans
• to plan 'their attack on their
next victims. We did, howeYer,
find out later that the Germans

the Italian offensive.
