The swamp had me beaten. Later I had the doubtful ex- perience of 'gazing along the north end of a compass needle while standing on snowshoes in 30-odd below zero in North- western Ontario. There was swirl of crystalline snow and the sun was coming up in a feeble, ghastly way. What made it particularly soul-stirr- ing was that according to the compass, the sun was coming up in the west and heading in- exorably far the east! It was established by dip- needle survey later that I had been standing over a big de- posit ofmagnetite .and 'the needle was flipped by the pow- erful magnetics in the area. Aft- er half an hour I sat down on a rise of ground for a smoke, then proceeded through the .swamp. Half an hour later I stepped up on a similar ham- mock for a smoke, and to my horror found I had been there before. There was the butt. Resolutely setting out again, taking careful bearings with the hand compass, I did my best to head straight south through that miserable morass. You guessed it. When I came up on that hummock again, for , the third time, the perspiration broke out on the brow. With the feeling of panic just starting to rise, struck due east and came out on a bush road from Which I had origin- — BROWNIE'S THEATRE SHOW Come As Late As 11:00 CLINTON DUSK See Complete AT DRIVE-IN Show — STARTS p.m. and THURSDAY "Days (Adult August And JACK LEE and FRIDAY 6 and 7 Of Wine Roses III LEMMON REMICK Entertainment) Cartoon Bob SATURDAY "Call "Love Glenn 2 Big In (Adult Colour Hope Is Me Colour Ford Colour -- — -- Entertainment) ONLY—Aug. Even the sea- soned bushmen get into some terrific jackpots, but most of them live to tell the tale, be- cause they are disinclined to panic, being accustomed to the bush and its ways. I well remember the feeling of panic that seized me back before I lost my amateur stan- ding and was hunting with a group of friends near Eighteen Mile Island in the French. Riv- er. I was supposed to be clog- ging through a swamp toward the south, occasionally making sounds which I fondly believed resembled those of a hound in full cry. It was a dank, drippy swamp, and the going was miserable. See Us For Your FISHING and HUNTING NEEDS.
