Old world atmosphere and
the audacious progress of em-
erging nations are in colorful
contrast with the pious evid-
ence of various religious beliefs
housed in si)e(tieular settings.
They are all competing for at-
tention with commercial giants
-- whose budgets must have
staggered under Oar cost of
their New York World's Fair
expenditures. If the skyline of
New York city is evidence of
architectural genius and blat-
ant modernity, then the horizon
of Flushing Meadow Park,
home of this year's World's
Fair, reflects the imagination
colour and native ingenuity of
the peoples of Europe, Asia
and the South American coun-
tries. Pagoda, temple, shrine
and market stalls transport
Fair goers into a suspended
sense of excitement, travel and
instant education. • To Mention a Few
Japan has always greeted
the prospects of exhibiting at
a World's Fair with boundless
enthusiasm. This year's "House
of Japan" is entirely construct-
ed of tons of lava stone im-
ported from Japan and chisel-
led by native treasons f r o m
Shikoku, who came to the US
with the country's sculptor-
designer Masayuki Nag-are.
The structure Ls stark and beau-
tiful and within its walls is
one of the Fair's most impres-
sive exhibitions of a country's
inventiveness and progress.
Most colourful is Thailand's
Buddhist Shrine, sparkling in
its gilded cast iron glory, en-
tirely imbedded with bits of
coloured glass and wood.
Almost surfeited with t h e
eye appeal of Republican
China's lacquer red Pagoda
pavilion, or the artistic per-
fection of the Polynesian mar-
ket place, the sound of an Irish
brogue broadcasting Irish stir-
- arnes, front O'Sullivan to Mc-
Patrtney and all the Fitz's, mus-
ically lures crowds through the
pavilion sponsored by this part
of the British Isles. A thin
little man with the lilt of lep-
rechauns in his speaking voice.
sits at a loom weaving Donegal
tweeds.
