In- stitute in Ottawa have added to the growingl volume of evi- dence that feeds are not the cause of mastitis outbreaks. The findings do not support some fairly widespread beliefs. Commonest of these beliefs are that grass or corn silage, or the use of large amounts of protein concentrate like cot- tonseed and linseed oil meals, will cause mastitis, says V. S. Logan, chief of the Institute's Applied Physiology and Nutri- tion Section. "When a new feed is added to the ration, it often gets blamed if mastitis breaks out shortly after," Mr. Logan ex- plains. • At the Institute, feeding tests during the past five years fail- ed to yield evidence support- ing these beliefs. During the tests some cows were fed rations in which 90 per cent of the nutrients were supplied from grass silage alone; some received corn sil- age only, and some cows were fed rations in Which 70 per cent of the nutrients were pro- vided by concentrate. The incidence of the infec- tion in the animals (about six per cent) was not affected one way or another by any of the treatments. Nor was it altered by changing from winter feed- ing to paSture, or back to win- ter feeding. The researcher also notes that tests carried out else- where have failed so far to show that there is a positive relationship between feeds and the incidence of mastitis. Although the evidence to date does not cover all feeding regimes, it is well to look else- where for the source of in- fection when an outbreak coin- cides with a change in rations, Mr. Logan advises. Scout Committee Met Monday (Continued from Page 2) scoutmaster. Mr. Merner re- ported on interviews he had conducted and said Mr. Hewitt was present at the meeting as a result. Mr. Hewitt was invited to address the meeting and said he would be willing to assume the role of scoutmaster until another leader could be obtain- ed but that he would be even more interested in organizing a Rover Crew, if possible. It was moved by Adam Flowers and seconded by Mr. Merner that Mr. Hewitt be re- commended to Provincial Head- quarters as scoutmaster. The motion was carried. Other business included dis- cussions of the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday, camp- ing sites and the 1964-65 reg- istrations. A meeting of registered scouts, new members wishing to register, leaders and group committeemen will be held in the agyfield Public School Thursday night (tonight) at 7:30 p.m. Bayfield Lions Hear Registrar Of Huron County The Bayfield Lions Club held its regular dinner meeting at Cedar Grove last Tuesday and had as its guests Stanley Township clerk Mel Graham and Huron County registrar Harry Ford. Mr. Graham was introduced by Lion Harvey Coleman and he spoke to the club relaying information on the Lions' pro- posed building project. Guest speaker Mr. Ford was introduced by Lion Fred Clift. Mr. Ford outlined the history of the Registry Office and list- ed the names of all the regist- rars prior to his appointment. With the use of samples of deeds, mortgages and abstracts he outlined the procedures used in transferring and registering property and how titles were searched.
