The entire fall planting pro- gramme was allated to the Ausable River Conservation Authority where 201,000 White Pine and 5,000 White Cedar were set out as refills on pre- viously planted areas and the complete establishment of a young forest on recentlyacquir- ed land. Many of these seedlings are planted by a mechanical plant- ing machine and where the terrain is unsuitable for the planter to operate satisfactor- ily professional hand planters are moved in to complete the operat ion. The planting machine under favourable conditions is cap- able of planting 7,000 to 8,000 trees per day and the individ- ual, planting by hand, can suc- cessfully plant from 800 to 1000 seedlings per day. The spring and fall pro- gramme of 1964 operated out of the Stratford Zone, in con- junction with County and Au- thority properties constitutes almost half a million seedlings, that with proper care and man- agement will reach maturity and provide sustenence for our ever growing country. So when the "good old sum- mer" rolls around again don't forget to take every precaution while enjoying these wooded areas and make it your person- al duty to avoid fires and help keep Ontario green.
