"Home" Matagami.Quebec
Very glad to be back at the
"old stand" after a three-month
stint in the bush of Northern
Ontario and Quebec, with a pack
sack full of bushy tales and the
cast iron constitution required
to dive back into the publishing
business.
CLINTON—Huron beef pro-
ducers will be surveyed by
the Huron County Federation
of Agriculture to determine
whether there is support for
a provincial beef marketing
plan.
The federation agreed upon
the survey after rejecting a
request yesterday by Malcolm
Davidson, of Brucefield, that
it go ahead on its own initia-
tive and recommend a mar-
keting plan to the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture.
Various farm organizations
have presented stands on the
proposed plan, county federa-
tion president Charles
Thomas, of Brussels, said last
night, but it is disputed
SPECIAL
whether they speak for the
majority of beef producers.
"Who represents the beef
producers?" he said. "That's
the real issue."
At the last meeting of the
provincial federation in To-
ronto, Mr. Thomas said, a
delegation from the Ontario
Beef Improvement Associa-
tion expressed objection to
the plan. But he said the as-
sociation was organized by
the provincial government and
has been accused in some
quarters with representing
only the larger beef produc-
ers.
Mr. Davidson is a member
of a six-man committee ap-
pointed last fall by Ontario
Agricultural Minister William
Stewart, to suggest ways of
bringing farm incomes up to
par with the rest of the com•
munity.
Eimer Hunter, of Goderich,
first vice-president of the
county federation, joined Mr.
Thomas in urging a grass-
roots poll among the county's
3,500 beef producers before
taking a stand on the market-
inb The federation unan
imously agreed.
Forty-four beef producers in
each township are to be ques-
tioned about the plan, in a
sample survey. The poll is to
be started immediately.
Ii the marketing plan is
adopted, it would mean that
all cattle—both beef and dairy
breeds—being sold for meat
would be disposed of through
open auctions, rather than be-
in, sold directly to packers
under contract or being taken
to the plants to be sold for a
price negotiated on the spot
as is sometimes the case now.
'A report by the Centennial
Commission says that:
"More than ever the whole
environment of landscape
and cityscape should be look-
ed upon as perhaps man's
largest and most noble work
and treated accordingly, be-
cause as for all peoples,
)ast and present, the mark of
Jur progress as a nation will
De judged in 1967 by the
achievement of our commun-
ities."
