Good grass
needs care
Each spring your lawn
should get a little extra at-
tention to get it on its way,
advise horticulturists with
the Ontario Department of
Agriculture.
To start good growth with
established lawns and to
maintain their fertility, fer-
tilizer should be applied as
soon as possible in the
spring. Special turf fertiliz-
ers such as 14-7-7, 12-6-6,
10-6-4, or 6-10-4 are most
suitable. In each formula the
first figure mentioned re-
presents the percentage of
nitrogen available to the
lawn. Lawns require about
one pound of actual nitrogen
per 1,000 square feet.
Therefore, with a 10-6-4
ratio, apply 20 pounds of
this fertilizer to the lawn.
During application be
careful to avoid leaving un-
fertilized strips or over-
lapping areas already cover-
ed, as this may cause burn-
ing or strips of poor growth
in the lawn. If the lawn is
actively growing, apply the
fertilizer when the grass is
dry, generally in the late
afternoon. This avoids any
possibility of burning.
Top-dressing may be need-
ed where topsoils are shal-
low or low in fertility. Top-
dressing improves the root-
ing medium and also helps to
level out some of the depres-
sions that may be in the lawn
surface. A compost material
which has been passed
through a one-half-inch
mesh screen makes a good
top-dressing.
If compost is not avail-
able screened topsoil is also
suitable.
Repeated light treatments
at frequent intervals give
better results than heavier
ones at longer intervals.
never apply more than one-
quarter inch at a time and
always spread evenly over
the surface and rake into the
grass.
