nd is the best type
of dog to use. He is
much slower than the
larger hounds and as
a result, the rabbit
will circle much qui-
cker when chased.The
snowshoe has very pow-
erful hind legs and
speed is his salvat-
ion. When chased by
fast dogs he can run
a mile in less than
two minut.e6, and will
run 'Tally miles distant
in hot pursuit. When
this occurs the hunt-
er may spend many ho-
urs trying to find his
dog, and in some cases
never does.
"One thing is cert-
ain, the snowshoe will
not :tole up during a
chase like the cotton
tail rabbit does. If
he did he would elude
most of his enemies.
"When skinned and
cleaned properly and
soaked in salt water
for a few hours, the
proper cooking makes
a snowshoe rabbit a
delicious food item.
However, once he sta-
rts to browse on ced-
ar, the flavor chang-
es and can be detect-
ed when eaten. This
can also be said of
the cottontail during
periods of heavy snow.
"Try a pair of these
rabbits dressed the
same as a chicken and
roast along with a
four or five pound
roast of pork. We have
yet to hear of anyone
not liking this deli-
cacy."
While living in the
bush, the simplest
way is to make the
legs and tenderloin
the basis of a stew,
along with a few bre-
asts of partridge or
ptarmigan if you hap-
pen to be lucky enoue
to bag some at the
same time.
Personal preferences
will vary 'of course,
but my preference runs
to the inclusion of
some onion, potatoes,
plus another vegetable
and finally some dum-
plings, made the same
as baking powder bis-
cuits.
with the dark back-
ground."
I know from personal
experience that this
is true. A small party
of hunters, including
your correspondent,
had a field day with
snowshoe rabbits in
the bush around the
old Borddulac gold
mine in Northern Ont.
The pure white rab-
bits stood out again-
st the dark ground
almost as brightly as
neon lights. It was
so simple to spot the
little beasts that it
took all the fun out
of it. The rabbits
seemed to feel secure
and would "freeze"
and stand stock still,
expecting to avoid de-
tection. It was just
too easy. Needless to
say, the stew pots
were full of rabbit
for a few days.
The Dapartment adds:
"The large pads on
the feet act in much
the same manner as
snowshoes used by man
making it easy for his
to travel on top of
the deep snow.
"Snowshoe rabbits
prefer dense bush to
live in, and like most
wild life, feed and
roam at night. This
food consists mainly
of vegetation, with
the exception of the
winter months. Once
the snow covers the
vegetation, he lives
on twigs, buds and
the bark of small
trees. During the day
he lies by old logs,
at the base of a tree
under brush or may
hide in a cave.
"When the rabbit is
startled, he usually
runs a short distance
stops, and if further
pursued, he will run
in a circle covering
an arra of two acres
or less, and in many
cases-he will come
back close to where
he was dislodged in
the first place from
hie resting place.
"When hunting snow-
shoe, the beagle hou-

IT HELPS TO SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE BULLETIN
Snowshoe rabbits
have been woven into
my experience in the
bush ever since it
began in 1934 in the
Little Long Lac area.
They have played an
important, in fact a
vital part on the men-
u from time to time,
but one can still
learn more about the
creatures by listen-
ing to the experts of
the Ontario Depart-
ment of Lands and Fo-
rests, who this week
sent us this bit of
information:
"There is one sport
that a great many
hunters overlook, and
that is hunting for
Varying Hare (never
knew the correct name
before) commonly kno-
wn as the snowshoe
rabbit.
"The snowshoe is a
yellowish brown col-
or in the summer mon-
ths. In the Fall he
changes color and fin-
ally turns pure white
with the exception of
the tips of his ears
which remain black.
"In the Spring, as
the warmer weather ar:
rives, the pure white
coat changes back to
the summer color.The
white color in the
Winter makes him so
much more difficult
to see against the
snow background.After
a thaw when there is
no snow on the ground
