Up With The New
"Down with the old, Up wit4 the New" was the order of things
a noor. Yondazi at th‘usands of point;; screen Canae.a, rot the very
....csst of vhich was Hayfield.
Hgre, et the tgal pole Clan. Grego- Squere, a godest assembly
of iublic school childreg, represegatives Council, Clergy and
.1.:ayfl.c3d Lions Club witheeeed a short, snappy ceremony at which the
Peove, 3g1g.F.A. Clift acted ad chairran and read the Queen's pro-
clamation. With prgyer, the singing of "0 Canada" -rd "The Queen"
the tattered old Red Ensign came down, even though it flies still
in Eany hearts, Tt was tenderly fc)ded away, end then the SL71.3py
new red and white Maple Leaf flag took *J.z official place at the
top of the pole, and that was tt. That's cur national flag, and it
is distirattve.
A CBC reporter who interviewed some Russian sailors as they ran
up the rew Cana: .lan flag on their ship in Montreal harbor, was
somewhat amused to hear the USSR, citizens admire the generous use
of red in the fla. A ship's officer commented that it was indeed
a nice thought to use a leaf with eleven poirts, one for each of
our provinces ? Maybe Northern Ontario is entitled to one.
Meanwhile, over at Clinton RCAF base, the lowering and raising
act was carried out with greater fanfare than in most places, and
with the difference that it was a Blue Ensign that care down. It
was a flag that lacked the long history of the "old red duster",
b-gt it waved over many valiant stations during World War II and
since and was a rallying symbol for one of the greatest fighting
armadas of the air ever known.
Tt is good to know, in a way, that two of our favorite flags
have been prayerfully tucked away in eafe keeping. Certainly they
are enshrined in the hearts of all who served under them, espec-
ially ir war, but also in peace.
The new flag we salat: -It stands for CANADA.
Settling Down
Fayfield's Village Council is beginning to find that taking up
the reins of office is a chore of no mean proportions, especially
in view of the long backlog of detail work that does not hang so
heavily on councils 'That have teen operative over a period of time
rermitting routine matters to become such.
Sere Council has found that there is no lack of proposals for •
action, coming from all sectors of the community. Here Council is
now becoming wary, because, unlike the Greeks of the old saying,
they come not bearing gifts, but looking for grants, concessions,
use of village property and so on.
Councillor Oddleifson hit the nail on the head when he remarked
a%cut a proposal at the rez:ular meeting Monday night that action
on it might be setting an unwelcome precedent.
Then too, this will be an onerous year with respect to setting
up services and regulations which have long been commonplace in
other centres which hare been in charge of their own local gover-
nment for years. The Reeve continues to do an excellent job for
the village, in the same fashion that he served the Ratepayers'
Association. The Councillors too are doing a good job too--and
they had better. All their works will be under intense scrutiny by
the public and press, due to the keen civic interest which has
been, whipped up by the re-incorporation campaign.
Council really has a tiger by the tail. We hope they don't get
bogged down before the ballot box rattles again I

situation.
Council expressed
itself as being "in
sympathy" with the
principal of exacting
revenue from outside
businesses which com-
rete with local busin-
essmen who pay busin-
ess taxes, but council
wished more informatio
as to how such a bylaw
might apply, and what
the results might be
in respect to both
permanent and summer
residents.

NEW HOUSE DESIGN — Archi-
tect John Bird, of Westmount,
Quebec, designed this large, three-
bedroom brick veneer split-level
house. The split-level house is a
relative newcomer to the Canadian
housing scene and embodies some of
the advantages of the bungalow and
the two-storey house. One feature
over the two-storey type is that there
are only six or seven steps between
floors which makes for less stren-
uous stair climbing. An advantage
over the bungalow is the greater
separation between the sleeping and
living areas. In addition, the split-
level type of house is most useful
in solving the problems presented
by a sloping lot.
The garage of this particular
house is at grade level and seven
steps lead up to the front door. The
living room is to the front of the
house. Behind it and seven steps
lower are the family room and the
kitchen. The bedrooms are eight
steps up from the living room. The
ceiling of the living room is at the
same height as the bedroom ceilings.
The basement, which contains heat-
ing and storage, extends only under
the living room. The best orientation
would be for the left side to face
north.
The floor area is 1,735 square
feet, excluding the garage, and the
exterior dimensions are 35 feet by
36 feet six inches. Working draw-
ings for this house, known as Design
762, are available from Central
Mortgage and Housing Corporation
at minimum cost.
