To draw attention to his pro- jec, he launched an unusual advertising scheme'. He would build a city at a spot in French Settlement, then known as Lakeview; be would call it St. Joseph. He could do so prac- tically overnight, complete with hotels, factories, and a harbor. He had visions of St. Joseph as a smelting centre for iron ore with coal within easy reach from the mines Ohio Superior of Michigan. Cantin got off with a good start, with a blare of trumpets. The scheme caus- ed a great furore. Some scoffed at it, many were deeply inter- ested. Cantin meant the scheme to serve his purpose and clue to his own belief in his idea, together with his marvel- ous ability as -a promoter, Nar- cisse 'Cantin was able to per- suade a great many people to invest in the enterprise. Of powerful phsyigne, standing six feet, to heavy built, weighing 240 pounds, of a commanding and convincing personality, he was able to contact and inter- est men of prominence in the business and financial world. He .did things in no mean way. Special trains were run from different points, emptying their crowds of would be speculators into Hensall, by 10 miles the nearest Grand Trunk Railway Station to St. Joseph. From there, •- they were taken ('by most up to date cartilage and best horses available, as at that time autos were not available) to St. Joseph, ten miles away. Not only men living in the dis- trict, but hard-boiled American and Canadian capitalists, put in their money.
