Fat In The Fire
THE DECISION of the Department of Educa-
tion disqualifying the two Bayfield men elected to
the area school board has thrown the fat into the
fire for fair, as outlined in the news story on the
front page.
Bayfielders are rightly concerned about the
future of the fine school we have here, and showed
at the Stanley Township election that they are pre-
pared to come out and vote en masse for men
favoring the continuation of the present system.
While it may appear there has been, some hair-
splitting when it comes to application *Of . the law,
there does not seem to be any recourse. Bayfield,
it seems, will now be entitled to one trustee as a
representative of the village.
It would be folly of a flagrant kind to toss away
the facilities we have here, and abandon a fine
modern building so handy to our youngsters in favor
of an area scheme. It is to be earnestly hoped that
common horse sense will prevail in the long run, and
no hasty decisions will be made. There must be some
sensible compromise that will utilize these facilities
and still satisfy the requirements of the remainder
of the school area.
By and large, the men that volunteer to serve
on school boards have the best interests of the
children at heart, as well as the interests of the
ratepayers as such. Until the time when these inter-
ests are not served, we'll hold fire.

Lots Of Talent
IT HAS COME to us that Brigadier Frederick
Clift has indicated that he would accept a nomina-
tion for the position of reeve of the newly re-
incorporated Village of Bayfield. Frank McFadden,
chairman of the board of trustees has been prom-
inently mentioned as a possible candidate for the
same post.
The scuttlebutt one hears around the village
seems to divide itself into pros and cons on the basis
of seniority of residence as against demonstrated
qualification.
There may be other aspirants for the office
presently in the "dark horse" category. This might
be a good thing too.
We suggest that the best possible situation would
be a good knock 'em down and drag 'em out election
with contests for all offices. This is the best way
to clear the air in such a way that everyone can
settle down to work and know that the government
has been selected in the best of democratic traditions.
It is understood that a meeting of the executive
of The Bayfield Ratepayers' Association will convene
Sunday with the purpose of guaranteeing that well
qualified candidates will be named and agree to accept
nominations. This is perhaps one of the most im-
portant functions left to the Association, following
on the excellent work done to date on gaining the
re-incorporation.
This does not seem to be the time for acclama-
tions. Let's have a contest this year. If we get
superlative local government as a result, then ac-
clamations might be in order next year.
