PLUCK THAT DUCK WIT
WITH PARAFFIN
If you're planning on bag-
ging some ducks this fall, there's
a new dimension in the clean-
ing job ahead.
Pull a switch from last sea-
son when there were feathers
floating all over the house and
everyone was commandeered to
help get the ducks ready for the
freezer -- just follow this quick
and easy method:
Get a bucket big enough to
immerse a duck in it and fill it
with boiling water. Throw in
a block of paraffin which will
melt and float on top of the wa-
ter. Now take your duck and
remove the wings at the first
joint (this eliminates those two
small bones which have little
meat, anyway). Pull out the
tail feathers and ruffle or strip
off a few handfuls along the
body to loosen them up so the
paraffin will penetrate to the
skin. Grab the duck by the
feet or the head and dunk it in-
to the paraffin a couple of
times. Then put it under a
cold water tap or into a bucket
of cold water until the paraffin
sets and becomes hard. If you
husk the paraffin as you'd husk
an ear of corn the paraffin,
feathers and all, will come off
right down to the skin.
To dress the duck, just cut
off the head and feet and then
split the back with a pair of
shears. Pull out the entrails,
clip off the tail section with
the oil gland, and your duck is
ready for eating or freezing.
You can re-use the paraffin
by putting it back into the
boiling water and straining out
the feathers from the previous
duck.
Of course, if you want to
save the feathers, this paraffin
method can't be used. If you
don't need the feathers though,

Stop Tulip
Blight in Fall
FALL IS THE TIME TO
STOP TULIP BLIGHT
Tulip blight is caused by a
fungus which over-winters in
the remains of diseased tulips
plants in the soil. It may also
be introduced into a "clean"
tulip bed if diseased bulbs are
planted.
The disease appears as tiny,
yellowish, slightly sunken spots
on leaves and stems. The spots
may enlarge and merge to-
gether, affecting large areas of
leaf and stem. Infected flowers
have minute whitish or light
spots on the petals. These spots
enlarge and merge together and
turn brown. The whole flower
may be blighted after opening
and have a bleached appear-
ance.
On diseased bulbs, spots
first appear as tiny dark flecks
on the bulb scales. These spots
enlarge and merge together,
giving a burnt appearance. Bad-
ly infected bulbs may fail to
bloom or remain stunted.
Plant disease-free bulbs. Re-
'move the dry outer scales and
examine the bulbs before..plant-
ing. Discard any bulbs showing
Yellow or brown diseased areas.
Choose a sunny, open site
with good air circulation for the
tulip bed. There is less blight
if the tops can dry rapidly af-
ter rain and dew.
Where tulip blight has been
a problem in certain beds, it
First Aid Equipment • is advisable to avoid planting
in these areas for two years.
However, if this is not possible
soil sterilization may be at-
tempted.
Work up the bed so that it
is loose and friable to a depth
of six inches. Water the bed
with a solution consisting of
one gallon of commercial for-
malin (37% formaldehyde) di-
luted with 40 gallons of water.
Apply this solution at the rate
of i to I gallon per square foot
of bed. Cover the area with a
tarpaulin, several thicknesses
of wet newspaper or plastic
sheeting forat least two days.
Do not plant the area until
the fumes have disappeared.
(This may take up to 10 days.)
Re-digging the bed will hasten
this process. This treatment
should be avoided where the
chemical may come into con-
tact with the roots of perennials,
shrubs or grass.
Formalin is very irritating to
the eyes, nose and skin. Avoid
breathing the fumes and do not
spill any concentrated liquid
on the skin.
Terraclor may also be used
for soil treatment. Work this
chemical into the soil at plant-
ing time at rates recommended
in the manufacturers' directions
SENSIBLE DIET REDUCES
HEART DISEASE RISK
The Nutrition Committee of
the American Heart Association
recommends the following pro-
gram "as a possible means of
lowering the risk of heart at-
tack":
Eat less animal (saturated)
fat.
Substitute vegetable oils
(such as corn, peanut, cotton-
seed, soybean) and other poly-
unsaturated fats for animal fats.
If overweight, reduce calor-
ic intake. Maintain desirable
weight when that is achieved.
In other words, stick to the diet
prescribed by your physician.
Make sound food habits a
family affair so that all mem-
bers of the family will benefit.
The association points out
that overweight aggravates two
conditions -- high blood pres-
sure and diabetes -- which raise
the risk of coronary heart dis-
ease.
