HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Bayfield Bulletin, 1965-10-14, Page 1There have been
a number of comm-
ents on the lack
of brilliant colors
in the turning lea-
ves this Fall. Just
why they are not up
to their usual fine
style is a mystery.
No doubt time and
a bit more frost
will tilt Nature's
paint pots.
Next meeting of
Huron County Hist-
orical Society will
be Oct.25 at Step-
hen Tvrp. Centre at
Crediton. W.E. Ell-

Huron county houses
with commentary.

' About 150 square dancers from London, Kitchener,
Stratford, St. Marys, Kincardine, Seaforth,Goder-
ich, Exeter, Clinton and other local centres had a
great time October 9 when they danced the night
away. Johnny Davidson from Hannon, Ont.,a TV person
ality, was guest caller. Sgt. E. Richardson, Clin-
ton Cross Trailers chairman who organized the dance
reports the party a huge success. Only casualties
were the fried chickens. Shown here are, standing,

A meeting of the
lest Stanley and
ayfield "Save Our
School" committee
;as held last week
to consider the sit
uation arising from
action by the area
school board to get
approval for some
$ 650,000 in deben-
tures for school
construction in the
local area.
An enthusiastic gathering of about
200 persons saw J.Carl Hemingway,55-
year-old Brussels farmer, accept the
N.D.P.nomination as candidate for el-
ection in the federal riding of Hur-
on.Mr. Hemingway, defeated in a rec-
ent federal election in the same rid-
ing, was not opposed for the nominat-
ion.
The mee ing was held last Thursday
night at Central Huron Secondary sch-
ool. Attendance was sparse compared
to meetings for the "old linen party
meetings.
Mr. Hemingway is a former secretary
fieldman for the Huron County Feder-
ation of Agriculture, and is well
known to the farmers of the riding.
He is competing with two popular
young men, Maitland Edgar of Clinton
Liberal candidate, and R.E.McKinley,
Zurich, Conservative. The seat was
held in the last Parliament by L.E.
Cardiff who resigned recently.
Donald C. MacDonald, leader of the
provincial New Democratic Party and
guest speaker at the convention,said
the recently handed down Braden re-
port on education proposes less than
half as much assistance from the fed-
eral government to build universities
as it did to build technical schools.
"It is not enough," said Mr. Mac-
Donald. The report on financing high-
er education in Canada documents in
unansNerable terms the gross inade-
quacies of federal government assist-
ance to higher education in Canada,
he said.
"Finally," said he,"we have a state
ment on university needs which, it is
hoped, will shock the government at
Ottawa into action that should have
been taken years ago".
"Unfortunately Prime Minister
Pearson's reaction was characterist-
ic of the government: having set up
a royal commission to study the sit-
uation, he now proposes to call a
congerence to study the report.Small
wonder that Dr. Bladen warned that
the situation is so urgent that act-
ion is required in weeks, not months.

of the N. D.P.

Huron for the November 8th

hart in Northern Ontario, he is
