(By R. S. ATKEY) GODERICH—Clerk-Treasur- er J. G. Berry, in his report to Huron County Council Monday morning, predicted increased casts and higher tax rate. Contributing to increased costs, as far as the county is concerned, are such matters as expenses of coroner's in- quests, county public libraries, county assessment commission- er system, and regional jails. "I would like to point out that 1967 is going to be another year in which our financing will possibly necessitate an increase in the county rate," Mr. Berry stated. "It is too early to pre- diet exactly what might happen but you should bear in mind the following problems with which we will be faced: (1) an initial payment on debenture issue for the County Home ($53,000 to $55,000); BAYFIELD — Fire of un- determined origin completely gutted the old Thomson house on the Bayfield Line in 'the early hours of Thurs- day last. Known as the "Haunted House", it was built in the late 1800's by a Dr. R. Gaird- ner. It has not been used as a permanent residence for many years and although the state of preservation of the building at the time of the (2) increased cost of operat- ing new addition to County Home; (3) possibility of continued building programs as far as our local hospitals are concerned." Continuing, the clerk-treasur- er pointed out that if there are no building plans for 1967, then the county would be able to divert some of this money for hospital reserve purposes, to the County Home debenture, assisting greatly in financing for the upcoming year. Bayfield To Talk Planning BAYFIELD—I. M. Ander- son of the sub-division sec- tion of community planning branch, Dept. of 'Municipal Affairs, is to meet with mem- bers of Bayfield Council on Friday morning, to 'discuss planning in the village. Mr. Berry stated that a fur- ther problem for future financ- ing concerns the situation at Centralia Air School. The county receives a considerable graht at the present time, off- set to some extent by costs of road maintenance, administra- tion of justice, and welfare. Last year the grant was $11,562. In this regard, he favoured immediate action to have it designated as a "depressed area" for industrial purposes. Newlyweds Visit Bayfield Couple BAYFIELD — Mr. and Mrs. Harry Land from Bodegraven, the Netherlands, are spending their honeymoon in Bayfield. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew H. Land of Vancouver, B.C., are on holiday here and Mr. and Mrs. George Land, also newly weds, joined their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Land for the weekend — and to complete the family circle, Mr. and Mrs D. H. Lana and their three children joined them for dinner on Sunday. A very momentous day, as it was the first time in three years the whole family 'had been together. BAYFIELD'S HAUNTED HOUSE FULLY DESTROYED BY FIRE One of the lost of Canada's mighty Lancaster banbers is scheduled to arrive at Sky I 'arbour Airport Just north of Goderich Sunday, June 14 about 2 pm.. destined to become a memorial to war veterans of Huron County, and especially to the R.C.A.F. and R.A.F. bomber crews who enlisted Own or trained in Huron County during World War IL The Idea of obtaining the giant craft recently declared surplus by the RCAF., is credited to the late Keith Hopkinson of Sky Harbour Air Services, who lost his life in a crash near the landing field only a matter of weeks ago. Colorful ceremonies have been planned for reception of the big inane which will be delivered from Dunnville by an R.C.A.F. crew. It will become property of Gode- rich Branch 109 Royal Canadian Legion, and be converted into a memorial on an appropriate site near the airport, (R.C.A.F. Photo/. fire is not known, it is cer- tain that it commanded one of the finest views of the lower Bayfieki River valley. We understand that the name of the person turning in the fire alarm is not known. Bayfield fire chief Walter Westlake reports that the building was in an advanced state of destruction When the alarm was turned in, by which time, flames were vis- ible frwu the village. On June 10,1964, Bayfield's own weekly newspaper, the first since 1895, offered Vol.1 No.1 to the community, with a front page as reproduced in miniature above. (See Page Two) Robert E. McKinley, MP For Huron Addresses County Council (By H. S. ATKEY) GODERICH — "I4y duties include such things as keeping up with affairs in my own county 'to find out what is needed; where a better place than the County Council in session?" Robert E. McKinley, MP for Huron, took Monday off from his duties at Ottawa, spoke briefly to Huron County Coun- cil, had lunch with the mem- bers, and listened to some of their problems. He was of the opinion that the International Plowing Match near Seaforth in October would be "a big thing for Hur- on County"; that Expo '67 would be "a great thing for Canada" especially in support- ing our efforts to sell our pro- ducts to other countries. "I don't think that Huron County suffers very much in comparison with other parts of the country," he declared. "Act- ually, we are all very well off here by comparison." He did not favour the principle of seeking to be considered a depressed area. Referring to his duties in the House of Commons, Mr. Mc- Kinley said he had been able to accomplish — not, perhaps many big things — 'but many little things. "There is no trouble keeping yourself occu- pied," he stated. He invited County Council- lors to mention to 'him any way he could help out.
