New president of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association John
W. Sancton, publisher of the Westmount, P.Q., Examiner, is shown at
right chatting with retiring president, J. L. McKenna, left, publisher of
the Sussex, King's County Record in New Brunswick, and Jack Struthers,
centre, senior editor, Centennial Commission, Ottawa. Mr. Struthers, a
former weekly newspaper editor at Newmarket, Ontario, was a panel
member at the CWNA annual convention held at Saint John, N.B.,
August 3, 4 and 5. The group was photographed following a panel ses-
sion on CWNA publishing plans for the Centennial celebrations next
year. Mr. Sancton also is chairman of the association's advisory com-
mittee on CWNA Centennial projects and next year's convention which
will be held at Ottawa Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

School held its picnic on Tues-
day, August 16, in Clan Gregor
Square, Hayfield.

Farming Report
Douglas H. Miles, P. Ag.,
agricultural representative for
Huron County, has issued
the following crop report:
"Parts of the north area of
the County received their
first good rain since June 14,
other areas are concerned
with continued wet weather.
About 50% of sizing crop is
harvested; corn is progressing
favourably; white bean yields
could be down on early ma-
turing crops. Pastures are re,.
viving after July dry spelt."

behind them years of experi-
ence; those entering the ser-
vices directly from civilian life
will have graduated from a Uni-
versity or Institute of Tech-
nology with a degree in Engin-
eering or a cicsEly allied field.

and Commercial mill rates
were not changed and remain
at 17.5 and 19.5 mills respect-
ively.
This years taxes will, how-
ever, increase for most
people, as the Public School
Residential Rate has been
raised to 11.8 mills, an in-
crease of $4.80 per thousand.

Susan Freeman, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Stan Freeman,
R.R. 1, Goderich, has received
a bicycle accessory kit which
she won as a second prize in
the Elmer the Safety Ele-
phant contest
On completion of a general
technical course, officers from
both groups diverge into spec-
ialist training branches approp-
riate to their future employ-
ment.
In addition to this main func-
tion, during the summer months
University students who are
members of the Regular Officer
Training Plan or the Univer-
sity Reserve Training Plan wild
receive training in the branch
they have chosen as their trade.
Advanced braining for Telecom-
munications Officers and spec-
ial courses, in electronics war-
fare and nuclear safety will also
be provided.
Vehicles
Repaired
Forty-eight of 257 auto-
mobiles found to have major
defects in the vehicle safety
check in Goderich two weeks
ago have been repaired, Police
Chief Fred Minshall reported
yesterday.
Another 215 cars, which
were judged to have minor
defects, have been approved
on a re-check.
Will Discuss
Huron EMO
Premier Robarts has pro-
mised S. Edward Malins he
will discuss the Huron Emer-
gency Measures situation with
Attorney-General Wishart.
Last week Mr. Malins wrote
a letter to Mr. Wishart about
EMO in Huron the text of
which is published elsewhere
in this paper.
He sent copies of the letter
to Mr. Roberts and Prime
Minister Pearson. Mr. Roberts
wrote back saying he would
look into the matter.
August 9th marks the transfer of training for
certain RCAF technical officers from CFB Cent-
ralia to CFB Clinton. On this date, a new Officer
Training Division will be opened at the Radar and
Communications School, Clinton, to replace the
training facilities previously situated at Centralia.
