Ran into Tory Gregg
in Goderich the other
day and while hashing
over old times, the
name of that grand
old sport Cully Roch-
of Listowel came
up.
Cully was chief of
police there for so
many years few can re
member when he start-
ed.He was a team mate
of the famous "Cycl-
one Taylor" when a
young buck, and tho'
age crept on, he did
not lose the sporting
instinct.
He put a lot of pep
into the deer camp on
the French River and
had many a younger
man dragging his rear
on his frequent trout
fishing trips in the
Bruce and about.
The story is told
that while trout fi-
shing on Manitoulin
Island on the Manitou
river, Cully spotted
a dandy huge speckle
in a deep pool just
below a rapids. He
tangled with the big
brute several times,
,etting him hoed
but always losing
him.
After several days
the thing got to be
a personal fued
a personal feud as
far as Cully was cone.

corned and he set his
heart on finally con-
quering the lunker.
One day on his way
back from the Blue
Jay river where he
had gone on a side
trip, he was passing
his special pool on
the Manitou. There
stood a happy gent
who had just landed
a speckle approaching
nine pounds.
Cully was greatly
upset at being thus
robbed of his prize
and immediately the
air was blue with
a 70-year backlog of
oaths right from the
heart.
He explained to the
stranger why he was
so perturbed. The
stranger smiled in
sympathy as one fish-

reproove Cully, but
ambled away smiling
broadly.
So the story goes.

Last Saterday morning I got out on the
Bayfield course for the first time this year.
I had expected to find it thick with week-
end golfers, but I've seen more out on a
rainy Tuesday! Whatever happened that morn-
ing to keep them all at home I guess Illl
never know, but was just as glad as I pre-
pared to tee off for that nerve-wracking
first time.
The two rounds I played can be written
off as early-season practice, but during
one of them an interesting incident occ-
ured involving a golfer behind. us. App-
arently he had sliced his long drive off
the 4th tee to a point in the right rough
just in front of that row of trees about
200 yds. out. We were just putting out on
the 4th green ahead,when suddenly a ball
landed on it and rolled off to rest about
ten yards back. Then, as we started to
tee off on the 5th hole, Mr. JOHN HAYMAN
noticed this golfer back looking under .
the trees for his ball. He obviously
thought that it had only gone a few
yards, since held probably heard it hit-
ting a few leaves en route, but was
pleasantly surprised to learn that held
actually hit a beautiful second-shot
through the trees to just past the green!
On the topic of rentals, any
one without clubs who would like to play,
but thinks the cost of renting clubs
would be prohibitive on top of green fees,
should think twice. To rent clubs is only
500, and with green fees, totals to a
very reasonable $1.75.
