Being as this might turn out
to be a hot sultry day, maybe
another tale about the cold will
run a chill up and down the
spine. This one must be credit-
ed to Jack Lawrence, proprietor
of Kitchigami Tourist Camp
five miles north of here on the
Bayfield Road. Jack's an old
timer as far as the extreme
north goes, and he has done
several long hitches on the
Distant Early Warning Line, in
the neighborhood of the Arctic
Circle and on Baffin Island.
Whilst shooting the breeze
the other evening, he popped
the question: "How cold does
it have to be to make an Esk-
imo cry?"
After giving the matter a bit
of thought, I had to give up.
"Well, believe it or not, I saw
an Eskimo cry like a baby,"
Jack said, and went on to ex-

plain that on an extremely rug-
ged station in the far north, it
was required to bulldoze sev-
eral feet of snow off a lake in
order to make a landing strip
for one of the giant planes
which supplies the radar sta-
tions. The Eskimo was driver
of one of the big diesel cats.
and had been working on this
particular project for several
days. In the early afternoon
he broke a steel arm on the
blade and climbed out of the
enclosed cab to do his best at
repairs to get the big giant
moving again.
When a truck came to pick
him up towards supper time, he
was shaking and shuddering and
blubbering like a baby, and
without shame. Nobody blamed
him a bit. It was 55 degrees
below zero.
Tribal Custom
Here is a fuzzy tale.
There's a peculiar tribe still
flourishing in Huronia which
observes a quaint tribal custom.
when the time arrives for one
of the braves to take a bride.
At an appointed time a group
of braves gathers at some out-
of-the-way spot and in comp-
any with the intended bride-
groom, they indulge in ferment-
ed potions of various kinds un-
til virtually Immobile. The re-
sultant similarity to graven
images, historians believe, has
given rise to the expressed
"getting stoned". I witnessed
a ceremony of this type for one
of the lesser chiefs of the Hays
clan at the Humnia camp of
Goderich, namely Bob Hays who
was honored with a "Gitche
potlach" on a big war canoe
owned by Bruce MacDonald of
the sailing tribe.
These old customs die hard.
Some of the fearless old braves
who partook of the ceremonial
waters nearly died the hard
way too.
Those familiar with the cus-
toms of this tribe which in-
habits the Snug Harbor area
deduce these superstitious
tribesmen believe that only
those braves that survive the
terlible ordeal of the potlach
are worthy of marriage. Fare-
well, 0 Worthy One!
Most hit-and-run drivers run
straight into serious trouble for
themselves, says the Ontario
Safety League, because the
majority are apprehended short-
ly after the event. In the first
quarter of 1964 there were 758
hit - and - run drivers of whom
530 were picked up by police
by the time the reports were
submitted. Only 17 of the 530
arrested were women.
