EDITORIAL

Pioneer Park Association
A report of the annual meeting of Pioneer Park
Association has been given front page prominence this
week, in view of the broad interest that exists in
Bayfield in respect to this institution.
There had been a few mutterings and mumblings
in recent weeks by persons seemingly insufficiently
informed about the Association. Subsequent publicity
seems to have cleared up most of the misconceptions
and misunderstandings. The report of the annual
meeting sheds more light on the subject.
The Association is to be commended on its
original act of securing the park for public use, and
for its faithful work in carrying on for the past 18
years.
We have confidence in the leadership of the As-
sociation and believe each and every member of the
executive is devoted to this continuing project and
intends to preserve and improVe the park in the public
interest.
The information is that anyone wishing to take
an active park in the work has only to join the As-
sociation by paying the required fee. Having done
this, one is in a better position to criticize or praise,
as the case may be.
Left Of Centre
"Extreme Rightists and extreme Leftists ought
not to be taken out by us and shot against the wall,
for they sharpen the argument, and make us realize
the value of the democratic middle course—especially
if that middle course, in order to keep up with the
times, is—and I quote what I have said before—`just
a little bit left of centre'. I am reminded of four
definitions: A Radical is a man with both feet firmly
planted—in the air. A Conservative is a man with two
perfectly good legs who has never learned to walk
forward. A Reactionary is a somnambulist walking
backward. A Liberal is a man who uses his legs and
his hands at the behest, at the command of his
head."—F.D.R. 1939.
Letter To The
Editor
August 15, 1964
To the Editor:
One of the nicest things that
has happened in Bayfield for
many years is the new library
on Main Street. This building
has been used for many pur-
poses over the years, but this
is certainly the best thing it
could be used for. I under-
stand it was Mr. H. Ormond
who visualized this germ of Vic-
torian architecture as the Bay-
field Library.
Now a committee has been
formed to raise funds to pay
for the building. Mrs. Oddleif-
son has used her talent to
make the attractive posters
and collection boxes. But I
haven't seen in print anywhere
nor have I heard spoken or
whispered, how much money is
to be raised. Most "building
funds" have a goal. What is
the goal — in dollars -- of the
"Bayfield Library Building
Fund?"
I am addressing this letter
to the paper because I notice
someone wrote to you inquir-
ing about the Pioneer Park
and there was an article the
following week explaining the
origin of the Pioneer Park As-
sociation, so I am hoping
someone will clarify the Lib-
rary Building Fund.
