Cracked eggs are downgraded from perhaps 25 to 30 cents a dozen to a few cents and some- times to nothing. Announcement of the purch- ase was made by officials of "Agrico" at the London office of the company. The fertilizer warehouse has been operated for the past sev- eral years by A. J. Mustard. son of the late John Mustard, The former owner. Plan Expansion The Mustard property is on two and a half acres of land on the west side of Brucefield and includes three buildings and an office-scale house. The existing services will be expanded to a complete fertiliz- er service centre for dry bulk and bag fertilizer. Equipment for applying different types of fertilizer will be rented to farmers. To Have Ainnionla Agrico officials also said an all-new anhydrous ammonia distributing plant soon will be installed and a railway siding will be laid into the property. The Agrico company now has plants at Chambly, Que., Port Hope, Orangeville and London. The company took possession of the property here on Tues- day. The problem is an old one and has been probed by scient- ists for many years in different parts of the world. At Ottawa studies involving the application of increasing loads and impact forces to eggs are being carried on by CDA's Engineering Research Service and Animal Research Institute. The former's Dr. Peter Voisey says the main problem is to measure the strength of the shell. There are indirect meth- ods of doing this, such as as- certaining the percentage of shell or shell thickness. But these do not shed enough light on strength requirements for the actual ways in which eggs are handled by man and mach- ine in hatcheries, grading and washing stations, and in pack- aging and retailing. In the CDA tests a relation- ship has been found between the amount of force needed to bend or distort the shell a set distance and the force required to break it. Dr. J. R. Hunt of the Nut- rition Section, Animal Re- search Institute, hopes that a non - destructive method of measuring shell strength in in- dustry can be evolved f r o m these tests. For instance the distortion of a shell under a force small enough not to dam- age the shell, may be used as a measure of the breaking point. Funeral Held For Clara Dutot Of Brucefield Mrs. Clara Dutot, of Bruce- field, died in Clinton Public Hospital on August 15th, 1964. Rev. Mains of Londesboro and Rev. Plant of Brucefield officiated at the funeral on August 17th at the Ball and Mutch Funeral Home in Clin- ton. Pall-bearers were Dick Mc- Cowan, Norman Baird, Walter Baird. Alex Mustard, Walter McBeth and Jack Deitz. Flow- er bearers were Fred Dutot, Bradley Dutot, Hans Lepping- ton and Bob Leppington. Mrs. Dutot is survived by her sons, Lewis of Clinton, Al- vin of Goderich Township; her daughters, Doris of London. Bessie Leppington of Brum- field; her brother Frank Mc- Gregor of Clinton; her sisters, Mrs. Maud Baird of Stanley Township, Mrs. Ella McCowan and Elizabeth Deitz, both of Huronview. Also surviving Mrs. Dutot are six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. • EDWARD FUELS SHELL Research work also requires an accurate method of deter- mining egg shell strength. The method under consideration is impact force, which is the kind of force to which the egg is usually subjected in commerc- ial handling. One other area of investiga- tion being studied in England is the effect of the magnesium content of the shell. Work done so far indicates that as the magnesium content of the shell increases so does its resistance to breagage. The question "What makes strong egg shells?" Should have some new answers in a short time, says Dr. Hunt. These answers will be useful in determining how the genetic make-up and nutrition of the hen contribute to the produc- tion of strong-shelled eggs. Mrs. Pearl (Mann) McFar- lane died after a lingering ill- ness in Goderich Hospital on August 26th. 1964. Mrs. Mc- Farlane resided at concession 6, Goderich Township. The funeral was hold on Au- gust 29th, 1964, at the Ball and Mutch funeral home in Clinton with the interment taking place in Goderich Cemetery. The Rev. Grant Mills of Clin- ton performed the service. Pall-bearers for Mrs. Mc- Farlane were Joe Flynn. Harry Watkins, Glen Slavin, Maitland Driver, Aaron Fisher and Geo- rge Monk. The flower-bearers were Hugh Flynn, John Flynn. Bill Flynn, Bob Watkins and Harvey Mann. Mrs. McFarlane was prede- ceased by her husband, Robert J. McFarlane and by her bro- ther. Charles Mann. She is survived by several cousins. Persons attended the funeral service from Toronto, Windsor. London, Hamilton and Galt.
